Hey Ladies! I need advice.
We just got 4 new bantams for our lovely roost and the old hen that we have keeps pestering them. I know there is a "pecking" order happening but how long does this go on? The Silver Sea Brights are terrified of her and the Old English Games let her run them around. Will this stop? Is this normal? Will they eventually get along?
On a second note, how do we introduce the new chicks to the outside area without letting them get too scared? We don't want them to fly away but want them to walk around like the old hen.
HELP PLEASE!!

Woot! On the wedding dress!! What fun. :D

Welcome Rehoboth!

Lil brownie: Sharpsburg would be the closest Poultry Swap that I can think of. At least to me. Another BYCer commented that as we have the Roots Auction and Green Dragon very close to us, we aren't as likely to have swaps close by. If enough people are interested, we could arrange our own at a TSC.

Bantams for Mom: sorry to hear they are having trouble meshing. My guess is that they'll work it out. I normally keep my chooks in their coop and run for a minimum of a week (and sometimes that's still not long enough) before letting them free range and expecting them to come back on their own. If your concerned, train them to come to you by offering a treat that they can associate with a noise or call. Like shake the meal worms before offering them, then they'll come running when they hear you shake the meal worms.

I am in Chester County. We breed:

BC Marans
BBS English Orpingtons
MF Bantam Cochins

We also have:
EE's
leghorns
Barred Hollands
A Silkie (just one)
A White Marans
A Cuckoo Marans
and a few barnyard mixes

Quote: That is correct. My reason for getting a few chickens was simply to have them running around outside. Chicken ambiance, you might say.

Eggs are a plus, but how many can one person eat? I expect to give away/sell most of them.
