Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

I have also begun the process of gathering wood and ideas gradually for a new coop building project.

I really want to get some day old chicks in the spring and will need a big and better coop in the spring as well.

Cant believe I am going to do another building project!

Lisa:

After Christmas, stop by the liquor store near the whole foods and ask if they have wood crates from wine...some are perfectly sized for nesting boxes...mention knowing me....

I would buy the case of wine an ask them to keep it in the crate......these things are probly the reason I am not suppose to go to the liquor store alone

Me also... and though I do like a good wine, Honey Bourbon is my weakness....

GM folk:

So nice to have warm weather....the crew finally elected to leave the pen to free range today....

Also, had a visit from troyer last evening...he stopped by to grab a couple of those crates....really nice guy....he mentioned raising an interesting breed of chook (that I can't remember) and mentioned his roos do a good job with hawks...
It was pleasant meeting you stake, I enjoyed our conversation and am very thankful for the opportunity to receive 2 of those crates. I believe they will be an excellent size for breeding pens.
The rooster that I was telling you about was this Ganoi cock. I will no longer be raising this breed but I really enjoyed them while I had them. The rooster weights ran between 8 to 10 lbs. at maturity.

Here is a Ganoi hen, she is a full sister to the rooster above. She is a ferocious and protective mother, I have never lost any chicks to hawks from these Ganoi. She will not tolerate any other hens in the same pen.

This rooster is molting. This is a son to the above Ganoi pair, he was just as protective of the hens from hawks as his daddy was. The reason I'm not raising these anymore is because it's almost impossible and in most cases impossible to have two roosters together beyond two months of age, because they will fight and seriously hurt or kill each other.
The hens tend to be just as indomitable as the roosters, because of that I am able to have only one hen per pen even if the pen is a 10' x 10' pen. They will not peaceably tolerate another hen except in rare occasions when a pair of sisters is kept together from the day they hatched. If those same two sisters are separated for a week, you can never again put them back together and expect them not to fight and hurt or kill each other.
I like it when I can have the offspring with the parents until they are at least 8 months old.

I do have several Ganoi x Cubalaya crosses of these roosters that I will continue using in my Cubalaya breeding program.
Here is a Cubalaya x Ganoi that I will be using for breeding this year. He has a Cubalaya father and a Ganoi mother.

WOW ! Troyer, you sure did choose a unique breed to work with, I can say that I know of nobody else with the breed..

How will you top that, what breed will you try next? will it be just as unique ? keep us posted.

darn I typed a long post and it just deleted!

Stake------let me just say you are the BEST!

I still owe you some beer or wine!

Todays nice weather was a perfect time for coop and run cleaning. As you know its part of their Christmas present.

I found the cleaning to be easy........and was actually fearing it because due to the snow and cold I had not cleaned as frequently.

I was worried about my chickens who are due to start laying maybe having laid an egg in an unusual place and it having frozen and burst.
I found no signs of this.

So now with the nice weather and sun.......
a cleaned out and refreshed nest box
some treats
and Christmas time
perhaps the girls might start laying? It would be a nice surprise

I am in the gathering of materials phase of my next build.

looking for bigger pieces of wood for the side walls
flooring material like vinyl..........I do have some floor tiles
and more wood in general.

not sure about the new location...........concerned about a gulley that would be a good location given my yard but not good because of drainage......
not sure how to really improve that without excessive work.

Hope you all enjoy the outdoors today and this week.

My chickens seem happier in this nice weather!

another question..how would/do you dispatch a turkey? do you use the cone? 22?...thank you. not even going to bother looking that up...had enough crazy reading..don't need to watch "jim-bob" wack a finger off on utube...

they are discussing that on the processing thread right now. not sure if your on that thread or not, links in my siggy skip to the last few pages

Troyer, VERY cool birds!

Stake, I STILL haven't made the hard cider....maybe today's the day.... Although I should be cleaning coops before the rain heads our way.
