Do you start your peas inside? I will never be able to plant by the 17th...too much snow & the ground is very frozen. We have found that Cukes and Zucci. grow fast enough that we don't generally start them inside..hmm, maybe I will this year....I need more room now...and another grow light....oh boy.
hahaha, oh yeah, just a little south..hahaha I am telling you what, that does make ALL the difference in the world!! April 7th is way to early here...haha...My dad can start his garden a very good 2-3 weeks before we can, around the time you get started..he is in Lancaster Co., right near *Wing.LMP:
I sow the peas outside....I try to get the rest of the plants in around 04/7....I have been wiped out before(not peas though), but, I cut the tops off 2litre bottles and cover the plants if frost...cucs have been tough on this..may hold them back longer this year, Zucs are pretty tough....also, I'm a bit farther south than you....

Anything we plant outside by seed does go out a bit earlier than the plants, it takes them some time to pop through the dirt...maybe about1-2 weeks, depends on the seed. Works well here..end of April the soil gets worked, plant the seeds..then around "mothers day", the plants go in..it is more of a safe bet at that time, although we have had to cover a few times.
We do "temper" the plants with the porch and cold frames/hot boxes. We usually don't have issue with critters eating plants, one year though the deer did wipe out the peppers, twice... but it was early enough for us to replace them. Our biggest issue is with the slugs...have been able to keep them at bay with some non-pesticide remedies...we have had them bad enough to go with the wicked stuff..sometimes you just have to.![]()
LMP :
From an NPR "You Bet Your Garden": cut the top off a beer can, dig hole so top of can is at ground level...pour 3" of beer in,,,,slugs will climb in and drown...going to try this myself.....who knows....
Drunken Slugs -- you know that ain't gonna end well . . .
Actually, the would be a good name for a band -- "The Drunken Slugs"
Very cute!!...What breed is that? hope it is a girl for you!
Have heard of the beer thing, never tried it...can't bring myself to buy just to pour it in the ground, I know-i know..you don't actually put it IN the groundLMP :

oh most certainly we did! I can't imagine how we wouldn't have!! Yeah, that road is umm..less than desirable. So many nutters on there, too fast, not paying attention...always accidents.LMP, you know I bet I drove right past you a few times, since I drive all over east pete at least once a week,,,,I either hit construction or accidents on landisville road,,,,and they do not mark detours to well....
wish I had another way to travel to work, but that seems like the fastest route...
We might learn something from our feathered friends...............I have recently enjoyed watching some live nest cams............and have come to the understanding of a condition frequently found in post menopausal women.
its called delayed broodiness syndrome!
Its when woman of a certain age ( post menopausal-----no eggs) sit around for hours in their home ( nest) and only get up to eat.............sometimes food is delivered..............this condition can go on for up to a month in some extreme cases.
In birds this "condition" is adaptive in developing ones young.........
in humans its...............well common yet seems to serve an unknown purpose............
ongoing research ( from a comfy recliner) is needed to further study the condition and the intervention approaches needed
if you know someone with delayed broodiness syndrome send pictures and feel free to send your documentation of the manifestations of this disorder to our research headquarters.
thanks for your support!
