I hear Muscovies are the very best at catching flies, sort of like guineas are the best at ridding a place of ticks. We really should all have a few of each kind, don't you think?

This morning I found a big fat centipede in our garage. I was so excited, I scooped it up and ran out to call the girls over. They all ran over bawking, excited that I as giving them a treat. I threw it in front of them, they all looked it over and walked away complaining that it wasn't something good. Do chickens not eat centipedes??

I never had luck with centipedes either but lately they don't even want worms lol. I think they get their fill of them while out in the woods digging through the leaves. They used to go CRAZY for them. Now they just look at them and walk away. If I call them over they expect either BOSS, berries, peppers, tomatoes, or fruits. They don't want lettuce or broccoli or anything "leafy". Again, I think they get their fill of that on their own. I have picky fluffy butts!

That's why I just picked up some Muscovies from wingstone! They are so cute when they catch a fly they wag their tails

We haven't had any luck giving them centipedes either... they must give off bad vibes or something because they don't get any more than a cursory glance before they turn away... now potato bugs are a different story! The hens will follow me around for ages if I turn over rocks for them to fid them under!

Maybe they are like toads and slugs....they have a foul taste and nobody messes with them...(though I did see my chooks take a toad outonce...humm, and I haven't seen that many this year???)

I am always a bit amazed....in the last 24 hrs...

"lemon slush"
"Finger nails"
"Various predators"
"Dumpster Diving"
"Ant and Fly eating birds"
"Auto sexing Ducks"
and "Sun Flowers"

go figure!...lol

Regarding kerbside trash/treasure:
Our local Council do a pick-up once or twice a year for larger trash/treasure, they send out a flyer that they are doing a kerbside pick-up on the Monday and we get to put out stuff like broken TV's, chairs, pretty much anything that two men can lift and put on the truck.

It is quite funny to watch, because on the weekend there are 'bargain hunters' galore driving around with their trailers grabbing what they can, by the time the Council come through on the Monday, there is not much left :)

On Wednesday I put out a dead PC tower and monitor, broken office chair and a large cardboard box .. all gone by Friday before the pick-up even started :)

I had my eye on a dog kennel across the road had put on the kerb... wheels were turning on possible broody-pen options but by the time I had made up my mind, it was gone! lol

Regarding chickens eating toads:
Toads are a worry here, we have Cane Toads, poisonous!
There is a long story about how/why the Cane Toads were introduced to control the Cane Beetles in Queensland. I am no expert on the subject but as far as I can tell, Cane Beetles spend quite a bit of time on the top of the sugar cane and Cane Toads cannot jump that high .. go figure!

That is awesome Ray!! So pretty too..haha

Thanks. I just buy a big bag of BOSS for like $20 in the spring. Scatter some, feed some. A lot don't germinate, the wild birds, mice, and chipmunks eat some, some grow.

Yeah, i'm lazy. My neighbor had a bag sitting on his plow and it spilled. He has a mass at one spot.

I have some coming up at random spots from birds carrrying them. I just let them grow. Same with wild berries, have little patches all over, I just go out and browse when I'm hungry. Wineberrirs and blackberries are in now. Mulberries and raspberries are done for this year.

The raspberries up here didn't do so well..must have been that last cold/freeze took out the blossoms..IDK...not one berry where they usually are when we go for our walks...just dries-out tips, where the blossoms/berries should have been. Very disappointing..and our friends up here that have a cherry tree & blackberries said they didn't get any of those either...the cold got them...
We are lucky..our blackberry bushes are full of beautiful fruit! Our first year too..sooo looking forward to those!
I love the idea of "browsing" for a meal...hahaha...so cool!
