Hey Folks:

Here's my next generation chooks:(lounging on the deck)
the OE..17weeks (first act, just like your girl and smart too)

The dork mix...she's a sweetie!

This is a full breed CCL girl...she's not crested and is a bit small for her age...

This is the backup roo...he's got a bit too much orange/bronze in his coloring, but he's godzilla in size...15 week and bigger than all the LF girls

There is a nutcracker that works on black walnuts. It uses compound leverage and is not cheap. Made of high grade steel, as I recall, with a large lever. My brother has one and it does work. Now, for the stained hands part.... I guess rubber gloves.
i just bought one of those for hickory nuts, still have to be pretty strong, which i'm not but when i run across a heavy nut, i call my husband to crack it for me, still better than a hammer and a hard surface tho. i sit and do it at night while watching tv

Someone new stated laying today! Though Lily (EE) was in the nest box last night throwing straw on her back, I'm not 100% convinced that she laid this egg. Could be wishful thinking since I want green eggs lol. Though I've never seen a brown egg with white spots before. I have 2 golden comets and a silver laced Wyandotte that are all really close so I don't know who did it. It was 5 cm and 1.5 Oz.

It very well could be your EE. The coloring was just a glitch. The pigmenting part of the reproductive system probably just goofed. Who knows? They may be green tomorrow.

Someone should invent a motorized one, like a little log splitter. Fun and practical! Bet your grandkids would crack them for you if you had a "hydraulic nut cracker"

I hope this is viewable - a quick way to get corn off the cob. Redneck style.

that is awesome!! ..I don't think "redneck" when I see that..i think..SMART! hahaha

Can you find a similar quick way to use up the black walnuts that litter the ground here every fall
we did some last year..very hard and messy. Most of them were inedible..which really made all that work FUN..
hmm.png

They say that the nut trees can change from year to year..as far as their nut inedibility...is this true?....We have neighbors that allow us to gather the black walnuts...which is awesome, but if they are always going to be inedible..why bother..it would be such a shame though..

One of my young roosters that I like a lot. He is a Cubalaya x Sumatra cross.
this is such a stunning bird Toyer...beautiful! They stand like they are rolaity..hahaha
Just watched Lone Survivor. Oh.My.Goodness. If you haven't watched it, get in your car RIGHT NOW and go to your nearest redbox and rent it. And watch it. It's the BEST.
I have a bunch of family that saw it already...I will soon, it looked greta in the previews!..

I have a gardening question and thought maybe you guys could help me out. This is my first year with a garden and it looks like I planted too many cucumber plants! Does anybody have any ideas on what to do with them? I don't want to make pickles
hmm.png
. It also looks like I might have planted my pumpkins to early. They are already orange. I am only going to use them for fall decorating, but how do I keep them from rotting? I have enjoyed my garden this year, and have a lot to learn. Any advice would be great.
my "we be littles" pumpkins are already orange too....hoping just keeping them on the vine will work

...I thought they would take longer, my count is way off!...the larger pumpkins are still green and growing though.
Do you like 'cucumber & onions'? This is a great way to use up extra cucumbers without canning....
**just slice onions on a mandolin or very thin..then slice the cucumbers 1/8 inch thick... alternate layers of each in a bowl or plastic bowl, (that you don't mind having a vinegar-onion odor forever.hahaha)...Mix 1 cup vinegar ( i use white, but use your favorite), 1/2 cup veg. oil, and 1/2 cup water..mix all together, pour over cumber/onions. Let sit in fridge for a couple days, stir around every now & then..done when flavor is to your liking & the onion/cucumber has softened a bit. ..and enjoy! They are great just as is..or you can put them on salads, burgers...whatever.
Some people add sugar if the vinegar mixture is too strong. I do not...i like the tangy flavor!

We are getting cucumbers this year, but not as many as last year, will be less dill and bread & butters canned, We have been able to put up about 8 jars so far...
same thing with the tomatoes. ..not as many as last year.
So, not as many jars of salsa will be made..BUT, I just put in (planted) 2 more "goes" of green beans so I can jar-up more 3-bean salad!! We have a bunch of those canned now..
Got to just go with the flow and what is working sometimes... The beets, I put in another row of those too! Looking forward to canning them!
It has been a real treat to eat out of the garden...this past winter felt so long..I can't believe that July is almost over already!!
