. I am so excited I can finally see a bit of progress instead of just piles of wood and walls laying in the ground. As you can see my girls are going to have so much more room, I think they are excited about it too, They have to check out the progress also.

Excellent! Now they need some more friends.

Last week one of my EE laid a soft shell egg in the water bowl, but found a pretty blue egg in the coop today :celebrate ....

Every so "neighborly" ;)

Agreed, even my older birds will occasionally let one drop out in the run.

Our first egg ever was literally laid at my foot.... I think the pullet was confused and came to me for her attention like she normally would when I walked into the run, then she couldn't hold it and popped it out right at my feet! I've seen a lot of odd locations with young pullets and it isn't uncommon to find them on their roosting boards when they are first starting.

Congrats on your broody! Fingers crossed she sticks with it... would be awesome if your LH's could be 'self sustaining'!

There will be two answers....one for the accountants and one that is cost out of pocket....from a business sense, if you save a ton of barley for the chooks and sell the rest, the value of the ton would be the market value of what you sold the rest for....this seems the most usable #....another measure is to get quotes from local mills for a feed mix that matches your mix and use that #.....its been my experience that when you really write down all the costs...it makes you head spin.....my two cents....

I agree with stake... and I would then take and measure out 100 lb of your mix and feed just from that bin until it is gone, that will give you an easy way to calculate out your yearly use.
thank you, cant wait to see what tomarrow will bring, Im like a little kid at easter

It is such a neat thing to start getting pullet eggs and seeing what they are going to look like... we have 3 due to start anytime and another 10 or 12 within 4 or 5 weeks... will be happy to see them in the egg boxes!

Ss, that is what has me confused. It isn't a problem to use on swine, beef or poultry. Why horses? And who the heck is raising horse meat??

Canadians eat it all the time. Very popular up there.
does anyone in the washington area have week old chicks?? I only have 1 hatch and need a freind for my chick,

Wish I was still over that way. Ton of chicks running around here right now.

thanks I even tried one of my broodies but shes not wanting it...I put a mirror in there now its chirping at the reflection :pop

I had a lone chick for the entire month of February. Someone bought all my chicks & later that evening I had a late hatcher. My daughter stuffed a bath poof in with her for company & it stayed in her room for a whole month til i got some broilers & she went in with them. She was the quietest chick we ever had. Due to the nature of her brooder buddy & her very puffy cheeks, she was dubbed Puffers. She is the friendliest pullet in the coop. She will walk right up to you & demand to be picked up. And she's bigger than some of my full grown hens already & she's only 5 months old. Expecting eggs from her any day now. A few of my December & January pullets just started to lay so she shouldn't be far behind.

Trying to figure yearly cost of feed, but I do not buy the bulk of my feed, it is made up of things that we grow..

I keep a ton of each from barley, wheat and corn, how do I put a price on that when the market changes constantly.

I can estimate the grower pellets at about 50 pounds a week but other than that it is a guess.

Do I put a price on the weekly mealworm treats also

I am sure my head will spin, but my current mixture has to be cheaper than 100% mill bought..

I ferment the grains all together and only top dress with the grower feed, and that's only because I worry about the them getting what they need from grains alone...still trying to find a way to use the soybeans
