Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

I often think this with Blarney's pictures, I can just imagine that view with a summertime thunderstorm moving in...I know it's weird, but I like storms.

not weird at all! There's NOTHING better than a good storm!

So I did it this morning. I gave Cookie's babies to Cloud (who took them without hesitation) and put Cookie back in with the rest of the flock. It's probablythebest thing I could do since she's the only bantam hen we have. Sugar was giving her a hard time chasing her around and everyone gave her a good peck to let her know where she ranks. She was NOT happy but I feel this is the best way to do this. She'll get over it I'm sure. She does keep trying to see over the edge into the broody pen. Her babies were hesitant to go under Cloud but I pushed them under and they seemed to get the idea. I'm going to check on them here in about a half hour to make sure everything is still going good.

Sounds like you made the best choice... she most likely will pout and fuss for a few days but should return to normal before too long. Just watch that the chicks continue to cooperate with Cloud for the rest of the day. I don't remember the #s but if there are a lot of chicks you may need to help Cloud with covering/providing warmth after they are a couple of weeks old, since LF chicks often outgrow Silkie mamas in a hurry.

I'll keep my eye in them. Thankfully, Cloud is a larger sized silkie. Not as big as LF but she is bigger than a bantam silkie. She has 10 to handle now. I went out to check on them a few minutes ago and they were all under her. We have them some treats and Cloud called everyone over. Of course all of hers came running but Cookie's crew was a bit slow to respond to her. After they realized there were treats there, they came running lol.

That was a good move... the quickest way to help them learn to listen to Cloud is by giving her ways to provide them with a good treat when she calls. We usually have 2 or 3 hens with chicks at any given time and it is pretty normal for a broody to call her chicks for a treat and end up with 5 or 6 of the 'neighborhood kids' also running over to see what all of the excitement is about!

Hello & Welcome!
Mixed experiences, some good people who I've become friends with, some not so much. Lots of no-shows from people who seem very interested in the first email, but never respond after that. Some sellers only want to meet at public places, and I can understand that, but generally people are good once you talk to them on the phone. I try not to make rash judgements with just a phone call, but often you can tell a lot in the first minute with them on the phone. People with bad phone etiquitte are often ill-mannered in person too.

Same deal with buying on CL, there are a lot of bad deals out there, but enough good people to keep looking. Wish I had more pens to pursue some of the deals I see out there . . .
we have been very fortunate with craigslist..we have picked up a lot of "free" stuff...some real nice people out there, but I am sure there is also quite the opposite... Have to be careful in every- time.

They are very attached to their cage. They organize and put things where they want them. A new cage is like you being somewhere new that you don't know about. Mine sometimes run in circles when scared. They eventually settle down.
very good to know!! We are definitely starting rabbits in the spring..no doubt about it!! Hubby is totally into it. Now just have to read & research..and get some pens built!!...he been talking quail too...one thing at a time though..geesh...he doesn't want to do things when when I bring it up ..then all of the sudden he says..."hey- It would be great to do this..or that"!

This pen is hard to get good pics from, here is the two mixes from the bantam pen. They have the coloring of the breeds but everything else says bantam Cochin.

700

This is the little boy he has the dark skin color and is just a little biggest.

700

And the little girl..

I am gonna keep both in the flock, who should get bred with who, I want to keep some of the white color without bringing out to much of the white breeds..

Hens I have mille fleur and roosters are mille fleur and a birchen.

Stupid auto correct......daddy was a white bresse, momma a mille fleur Cochin.......now to hide the white bresse all except the coloring. In future generations..
