I love the bk chicken ads with the teenage chicken with pink toenail polish going out.
Isn't that silkie a rooster though? I do get a chuckle out of them

I have learned the hard way that turkey poults and cornish meat birds should not be brooded together. Went to check on them and the turkeys pecked at the butts of my poor chickens. I had some blukote and sprayed them and removed them from the turkey brooder. I thought since they were the same size and age they would be ok together. I guess turkeys like the taste of chicken

Aww! So sorry about that! I wouldn't have guessed a problem like that.

I just brooded turkeys and meaties together and didn't have that problem at all... I did lose a couple of meaties though, but I'm sure it was in part due to feeding higher protein feed (since the turkeys need higher protein) which exacerbated the leg problems that they are prone to develop. My poults are about a week older than the meaties too and learned to eat from the feeder before we put the chicks in with them.
I'm sorry your turkeys are picking on your chicks, just wanted to let you know that it isn't always a problem with turkeys & meaties

The people that are giving me their old coop had one lonely hen left and asked me of I would take her in. Of course I said yes. She's a sweet little speckled Sussex named Henny Penny (in just calling her Penny now). She's 4 years old so obviously won't be laying much but the poor girl has horribly twisted toes :(

she gets along fine on flat surfaces and stuff but I feel bad when she struggles to go up and down ramps. She can't perch on things. She's probably too old for me to do anything for her but I'm asking just in case. She's definitely a sweet heart. She's never had fermented feed before and I think she's LOVING it lol. I can't wait to see her out free ranging for the first time (their birds were always confined). I'm going to wait about a week until she learns that this is home.

I have the 4 together not with the other meaties and not with the turkeys. I hope they will start to feel better and they will all be feeling better soon. Never thought that the turkeys would have done that. Whenever we have critters, they never follow what they are supposed to do or not do lol. I had a beautiful dwarf lionfish that committed suicide by getting trapped between the tank and the heater.

My husband came home today, and wondered why I don't have chickens and turkeys.
I'll be messing around with coops next week, and deciding what to do. So many decisions to make when starting all over again! How many/what kind/what age? And I can't get ducks out of my head! That is your fault, chippysmom!!

No one here will do anything to encourage you. You know us all better than that.

Eta: and I'm blaming chippysmom for messing up my breeding/hatching plan for this year. Maybe we can blame her for everything!

J/k :D

I've had problems with cannibalism this year too. The chicks & poults are both in on it though. I've lost some of each from this batch. Never had a problem with cannibalism before. Not sure why this batch is doing it.
