OK.... just wanting to be neighborly here.... thought I would let you know I have numerous youngsters who were hatched from early February and a few later in February/early March. They are all spoiled rotten, constantly underfoot when I am out in the yard and starting to be ready for sale as I figure out 'for sure' roosters. I would love to see some go to you for free, I will even deliver if you are interested. They are mixes of large fowl birds and would be good roasters if you get an accidental roo, or just call and I would pick them up for you. The reason I would like to see you take a few is I know how friendly they are and they should be laying by mid summer. I can also deliver a couple dozen eggs for you to hatch, mix of light and medium brown and some green ones.... Or if you want to just go with eggs we can start with that! Sounds like a great reason to come visit you for a morning cup of coffee!

My husband came home today, and wondered why I don't have chickens and turkeys.
I'll be messing around with coops next week, and deciding what to do. So many decisions to make when starting all over again! How many/what kind/what age? And I can't get ducks out of my head! That is your fault, chippysmom!!

you're near me right? You can have some hatching eggs if you want and I have a surplus of turkey eggs in the bator lol (way more than planned! ). A lot of mixes but you're welcome to a few :)

I've had problems with cannibalism this year too. The chicks & poults are both in on it though. I've lost some of each from this batch. Never had a problem with cannibalism before. Not sure why this batch is doing it.
I have chicks hatching right now...lots of them...
I've figured out my cannibalism is all the guineas fault. Those are wicked little things! Small "velociraptors" I think. They removed most of the beak from 1 chick before I noticed what was going on, then they started going for the turkeys snoods, got them bleeding and started a frenzy. I separated them from the turkeys and put them in with some adult chickens that are at least 5 times their weight - that seems to be a level playing field and they are not happy about it. That, combined with the terrible fertility, has me rethinking the guinea project. They have exactly 1 redeeming quality - they eat ticks like nothing else in this world.

No guineas here & these birds are 8 weeks old. They have literally pulled the intestines out of 3 chicks & a poult the past week. They smashed a few others when the coop door got left open on a cold night & they piled on top of each other to get warm. I've had to blu-kote several wings & tails, but the vent picking escalated so fast I couldn't stop it in time.

LOL!! Too funny, Fisherlady.
I need to figure out what I want. I sold my birds to a local woman, and I could get some eggs from my own Bourbon turkeys, and chickens. I just don't know what breed of chicken I want. Buff Orpingtons have been on my list all along.
Are all Orpongtons good broodies and good for meat?

Been trying to catch up for a few days, wanted to share this note written by our awesome Montgomery County 4-H leader in reguard to the AI outbreak. This is for you, Lisa.
