He said yes! :weee. Even before he got his dinner or dessert! So excited, I've wanted silkies again since we had to give up our Roo Hercules. Now I get fluffy girls that may go broody. And plenty of other girls to lay fertile eggs for them. My chicken math will go from addition to multiplication in the spring, haha.

YAY! Congratulations!

Hi there! I would love to give your lovely girls a forever home. We just moved, and I am still get my setup in place, but I do want silkies again! My last one was a Roo and we had to rehome him. I am willing to drive an hour to pick them up. I am in Upper Bucks county. Feel free to Pm me if you'd like more info about me. Thanks for trying to find them a good home!

If mine were all laying and the only one laying didn't try to go broody on my already I would give you some eggs to hatch. Or I would be able to hatch just she isn't started back up yet if you would be interested I will let you know as soon as she starts again.

Why silkies?
Because they are great pets! They are the King Charles Spaniels of the chicken world. They don't even try to by productive, just lovable.

Anne, do remember they are "special needs" chickens. They would be the first to get picked off by predators or suffer a bad chill if they get wet in the winter.

I'm debating about silkie. I love them, but I am afraid if they insist to broody, I'll give up and give them eggs to hatch. Then chicken math will become out of control.

I guess it depends how big the ground we will have. If it's more than 2 acres, hubby may not mind having some roosters, I hope.

 Why silkies?

Yard ornaments and potential broodies. I always love critters and I always prefer to rehome if I can. They're just cute. I have enough other girls to do decent laying.

Agreed, they'd just cute. But in my case also, they will make themselves useful just by going broody once in a while. Thanks Dennis, I do remember that. I will make sure to have a couple lower roosts for them and to keep an eye out. Also, I am investing in the Chicken Guard door opener system. I told my hubby, it's just not an option. Because I don't get home from work by 7 usually, I need to have a good system in place. $200 is a lot of money, but the peace of kind will be worth it for sure.

For those of you with both turkeys and chickens, do you find you have less hawk attacks with the turkeys around? I have seen Hawks around here, but I haven't seen any take a dive yet. The girls don't hang out in the open much anyways, but I was wondering if the Tom (because he's big) would scare off Hawks more than just a flock of chooks. Just curious.

Also, when I get the chicken guard door opener, and I have everyone trained to go in at night, is it safe to free range during the day ? They have lots of cover and woods to hide from Hawks, they are not in the open much at all. I will have a run constructed by winter, but probably not for another few weeks, as I want to make sure to do it right.

Just wanted to share something I found at the thrift store yesterday. Awesome animal carrier, looks to be collapsible. $25 but I had a $15 off coupon. For reference, my dog is about 55 lbs. she could fit in there if necessary. It will probably bring home my silkies soon. :D
