Good evening all:

A few questions on chook genetics...

1. I always thought silkie's were bearded by standard.....???
2. the difference between Bk/blue/splash and LAV...thought Lav's is a separate gene that breeds true while the others always have a variable in breeding...

comments welcome....

1.It's my understanding that there are both bearded and non bearded silkies. Both are acceptable. I'm not sure if under exhibition they are entered separately or not.

2. Lavenders should breed true. Only BBS have the variations

What happened? Did you end up with some surprises?

The weather (wind) got me!

:hugs. Best of luck getting that back together.
I took a few pictures today :)
Congrats! They look great. Awesome news about the turkey eggs too! When I checked on the chickens tonight, I woke Tom up and he had this nasty soupy poop. Had the same thing last night. Tonight it smelled very strongly, like ammonia. Have you guys ever had that before? Maybe because he was out in the rain for a couple of days? Or maybe I just never noticed it before. It was so strong I covered it with some fresh shavings. In chicken news, one of @stakes girls starting laying for me today! One of Rusty's sisters. A beautiful olive egg. 6 eggs total today.

Good to see your crew is getting its game on,,,,,Rusty's brother is not nearly as colorful to date, but he's started to crow...(pretty pitiful though) pretty good color olive inho...!!!

I didn't see this earlier. Thank you for your concern!

Wow, that sucks! Let me know if you need a hand getting it back up... are you changing anything while it is down?

I am definitely thinking of a remodel. But in the spring. I will have to decide on a plan still. Fortunately they free range anyway.
Thank Radioman again for giving me hot water again! I think of it often.

If you need a helping hand this spring, let me know too. As long I can, I'll be there :)

That is accurate. I think some people prefer the non-bearded silkies. The Lavender (aka Self-blue) gene is recessive, it can be carried by a bird and never show in their appearance, but then pop up in the offspring if 2 "carriers" are crossed. BBS is partially dominant, so it always shows it's presence. It's absence is black, 1 copy is blue and 2 copies are splash. A bird with only 1 copy of lavender is often referred to as "split" (one of your black Ameraucana chicks is this way).

Another lesser known difference is that BBS only affects black, Lavender affects both black and red, a wild-type color, like a brown leghorn or welsummer, becomes an "Isabel" if it is homozygous for lavender.
