Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

Hello, I'm new to BYC! I'm from the northwest part of PA. Dealing with some icky snow, but currently hatching 5 eggs in the incubator for the first time.

Welcome. Certainly hope your snow isn't headed our way (But according to the weather forecasts it probably is.

) What kind of eggs are you hatching? Good luck with them.

The different colors of Ameraucanas (I have 6 total) lay at different rates and are different colored eggs. I don't have hard data, but as layers I have to give the nod to the CCL's overall. They are the "best overall" for laying. Not that I don't love Ams (that's why I collect them, LOL). The truest blue eggs, consistently, are the Silver Ams. They are pretty decent layers too. The Lavenders are laying well now, but they take "forever" to get big enough to sex, the silvers are sexable quite early, maybe 3 weeks, but not as early as the CCL's (1 minute, LOL).

The other "breed" to mention is the blue egg black sexlink. Best overall layer because they are hybrids, lighter blue egg, but still clearly blue. If you like the look of a black Am, these are the layers for you. If I ever build a laying flock for pastured eggs, they will be the blue egg component of that flock (Cali Greys for white eggs and commercial red sexlinks for brown). That would be a pretty flock too, black, barred, and red.
Would the female offspring of a blue egg black sexlink lay blue eggs? Does it depend what they roo is?

The rooster would have to carry the blue egg gene too. I've been breeding these, love them, but as sex links, that only holds up in the first generation. The girls are black, the boys are barred. I consider the black sex links to be EE's and as black ee's the sex link part won't carry over to the next generation but mated to a blue egg layer, the color would.
Bred to a rooster carrying the brown egg gene you could get olive eggers, too.
But I do love these birds.

Sorry if this is a sensitive topic, but does anyone have a good home option for a kill cone? I am going to euthanize the banty tomorrow, but I don't have one here. It doesn't look like they sell them at tractor supply, unless they go by a different name.
My husband used a 22 pistol for an aggressive cockerel last fall. It was the first time we had ever culled since we were new to owning chickens. I got a LOT of grief from people on other boards here on BYC when I asked about cutting the throat or cutting off the head vs a bullet. People felt like we were being cruel, but my husband felt more confident with a pistol then any other method. He held the cockerel down with one hand and shot it point blank range. It seemed quick and no more cruel then any other method.

I also saw a DIY killing cone using a traffic cone...cut the tip off until the needed size, nail to a tree.

I'm sorry that your banty is sick

Olive egger would be fine

And I assumed the sex link wouldn't carry
I was just wondering if it would all revert back to brown eggs in one generation...cause that would make me sad!
