Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

The different colors of Ameraucanas (I have 6 total) lay at different rates and are different colored eggs. I don't have hard data, but as layers I have to give the nod to the CCL's overall. They are the "best overall" for laying. Not that I don't love Ams (that's why I collect them, LOL). The truest blue eggs, consistently, are the Silver Ams. They are pretty decent layers too. The Lavenders are laying well now, but they take "forever" to get big enough to sex, the silvers are sexable quite early, maybe 3 weeks, but not as early as the CCL's (1 minute, LOL).

The other "breed" to mention is the blue egg black sexlink. Best overall layer because they are hybrids, lighter blue egg, but still clearly blue. If you like the look of a black Am, these are the layers for you. If I ever build a laying flock for pastured eggs, they will be the blue egg component of that flock (Cali Greys for white eggs and commercial red sexlinks for brown). That would be a pretty flock too, black, barred, and red.

Does anyone one else buy their chickens salad mix?! Or I'm I the only crazy!!?? Picked up a large bag of spinach mix on sale the other day and tonight bags were $.99 on sale!! My chickens love getting some salad!!

Been there, done that! We have a discount grocery store near us, so whenever they have produce for low prices, I definitely snatch up some extras for the girls. My last flock really liked lettuce, it this group doesn't seem to as much. Maybe they will like it more when spring and summer are here. A few weeks ago, the store had a lb. of blueberries for .99, so I got a couple for the flock as well. The turkeys seem to really like them.

Set 313 eggs tonight, including 233 Legbars! Hatching season starts for real in 3 weeks.

Today's hatch so far is 20 Olive Eggers and 2 Lavender Ameraucanas.

Wow! You're really getting going now. I candled the eggs under my broody last night. All of Aurora's eggs are developing. All of my midget whites were infertile. So I put some chicken eggs under her as well, since last night was day 21. I haven't seen my Tom hopping on his girl much, but I'm at work all day, so I figured maybe I was missing it. Do toms mate a lot less than Roos? I'm hoping in the spring the hormones will kick in and he will get his rear in gear.

GM all:

Its really tough keeping up with this thread....Howdy to the new folks....and @Blarney, nice to see Bella, she's a special pooch....

We have a discount grocery store in my little town. I went in once recently to look at their prices for buying stuff for the chickens. I didn't think their prices were any different then the grocery stores. I bought some discounted squash for them the other day at Giant that was in the need to sell/expiring shelf. I've gotten ok deals at Ebenezers discount store in ephrata. But I don't head that way too often during business hours. I drive 40 mins the othe direction to work so not a lot of time after playing with my pony
