I found a very similar wound on one of my pullets who is not being housed with any cockerels. I'm assuming that she was grabbed by a predator and got away. I separated her for a bit and put blu kote on it -my bird was acting depressed, which is why I separated her. (Standing along, puffed up, eyes closed, unable to fight her way to food)
. How about that. Head missing usually means raccoon, but daytime? That says fox or hawk to me. Please let us know what you see on the trail cam.

She was standing like that when we picked her and I wanted her because when I went last time she walked up and stepped up on my foot. No she's doing it here. What do I do for depression? I'll definitely put the blue stuff on!

From what I saw they are calling for 8-13 inches here in the Gettysburg area. My ducks love the snow I'll have to try to get a video but they will fly into the air about 3 feet or so and slide down the little hill their run is on it's so funny.

It's nice to give away eggs, but if the people are not in a financial bind, I think it's ok to ask for a little money.

My co-workers refer to my afterwork activities as "Farm Fit" and say I should charge people to come get fit out in the rural world. Funny, they never volunteer to be my trial customers.

Here, we only sell eggs if they're hatching eggs. We give away extra dozens to family and neighbors but only mixed breed, eating eggs. During hatching season, there's rarely many to share though.

I really need to get "farm fit" lol

Hey all! Just watched this show last night, after a customer told us about it. It is a long episode of a tv show. This guy raises a clutch of wild turkeys from eggs to adulthood. They imprint on him and follow him everyday. Very interesting story. I could see it happening to @dheltzel if he didn't have a wife and a job. Haha!

I just checked the weather forecast. They are calling for 8-15" for my area on Tuesday! Yikes, I think I'm going to keep everybody in the coop whether they like it or not.

I love raising turkey poults from eggs. I have a couple that are very imprinted on me and follow me everywhere. They will never be on the table lol

Last I checked, our forecast was 4-8" but it's already gone up once. It may go up again :/

Just wanted to share a cool broody story today.

My broody Mama took her turkey poults out today in this bitter cold weather (around 32*). We had to leave at about 4, and wouldn't be home until after dark. I wanted to make sure the broody and her poults got inside for the night before I left. So I asked hubby to help me try to herd her back into the coop. She ended up running away and screaming which got the dog excited. The dog didn't try to hurt her or the poults, but got excited and started to run "with her". This of course scared Mama he more, and she ran screaming hysterically all the way across the yard. I tried to herd her again, but with no luck. I put the chicks in the coop and hoped she would follow them in.

I came back out five minutes later to check on her and the poults. She was in the coop with them as if nothing had happened. I then realized, she was being an excellent mother! She was trying to lure thre predator (my dog) away from her chicks. When the coast was clear, she ran right back to them. Smart cookie! big_smile.png

Lol, that's hilarious! She's a good mama :)

I'm sure you know, but, Just to be clear, 'depression' here is not a term I'm using relative to state of mind. But a description of a symptom.

If I were you, I'd seperate her for a day or 2, get her warm and easy access to food. Blu Kote her butt before adding her back to the flock (if she seems to be better) at night time so that she integrates easier.

With my pullet, I removed her from the flock, put her inside the house in a dog carrier and after 1 day she seemed to be fine and was fussing to get out of the carrier, so I added her back in the next night. 2 days later, she seemed even worse, so I pulled her again, but this time I kept the dog carrier right next to the coop with the other birds, after about 36 hours she was as right as rain, she's been doing well ever since.

Sometimes when there is an underlying illness in a bird, it's flock mates will sense it and pick on it.

Hi, not sure if anyone can advise, but today I found one of my hens sitting on the coop floor. She is very lethargic and her combs and waddle are greyish pink. I see some poop on her behind, but she has always been our one hen who had poop on her butt and never was actually sick (since day one). She is part of my older flock, who I have had for 4 years. To date, I have been very lucky in that we have not had any illnesses. I am worried that my luck has run out...Unfortunately the vet who specializes in livestock cannot see her until tomorrow. My other vet has no experience with chickens so I am thinking I will wait. At this point I moved her into our shed with clean water and nutri-drench, but she does not seem to want anything. I have tried dipping her beak in but she is barely opening her eyes. Does anyone have any idea what I may be dealing with? I am worried about the rest of my flock. No one else is acting odd but I am not sure what to do next.
