I really hope things go well with your shipment. My chicks got here this morning. Got that call at 6 AM. 40 chicks, all chilled, at least 4 dead from the cold. I put the ones that looked real bad into an incubator to get their body temp up quickly. Some of those look like they might make it. I am not sure the breed of the dead ones, though for sure one is the lone polish :(

The remaining ones are running around and eating. I gave them Grogel and put some sugar in their water to give them energy (and get them hooked on sugary drinks).

Sorry you lost a couple. I haven't had any Polish yet but of course I want them lol. I have to keep telling myself I'm only 33 and I have plenty of time to get every one I want. Hubby wont be home till end of next week (3 weeks instead of the 1 they thought) and I really need him to hurry up so I dont get anymore... Have to go to tractor supply in a few.... Getting another Peking girl today or tomorrow from a guy I've gotten a lot of my girls from. Going to name her Rose after my grandma I think.

Good morning, Anne!

Morning dear!
Quote: Hope they improve, it has been a nasty cold spell we have here. Looks like next week will be in the 50s!

Im really nervous. Luckily my post office is only 5 min away and the lady incharge does a lot of craft shows with me so I know she'll call right away. I hope they are okay. Really worried about how many "packing peanuts roos" are in the box. Don't think I can put them in any of the 3 brooders I have going already and I really dont know what to do with them. Waiting to see how many.

It will all work itself out, don't worry.

Remember, even if you get a few roos, it will be weeks until they start crowing or being a pest.

My broody turkey has apparently signed all the papers now and is the legal guardian of the poults. Last night, the hatching Mama BSL was roosting with the rest of the chickens, and today she is with the rest of the flock. Mama Turkey is taking the poults around and keeping them warm.

The past few nights I have had to army crawl under my coop to get my turkey and poults. I think she is afraid to go into the coop because the rooster has been going after her. Hopefully he will be distracted when I show him his two new girls for his harem. Last night when I tried to get her (turkey Mama), it was not completely dark, and she was not asleep. She was NOT happy with me! I got a couple of attack kicks to my head; thank God I was wearing a hat! I don't blame her though, I was taking away her babies. I think it's absolutley amazing that she went from tolerating the poults, to full adoption, in the span of under two weeks.

She will do good for you, and will probably be faithfully broody once or twice a year from here on.

Where do you buy Grogel? Did they have heat packs in with them? When I got my English Orps, more arrived dead than alive--or dying. It was horrible. But the ventilation holes in the box were not covered with fabric and they didn't put heat packs in--I am just wondering if that would make a difference...

You think they turkey will be? Or the chicken? Maybe both!

Edited to add: I don't know if the turkey will be a good broody if she thinks poults just appear out of thin air, or are stolen from someone else.

I buy a larger size of Grogel (2000 "doses") for $20 from Jeffers Pet. I go through less than 1 pack a year, giving it to all my chicks when they are first put into brooders.

The cold snap and they fact they only put 40 chicks into a 50 chick box conspired to all them to be chilled more than they normally would. I had paid to have them shipped express and they went priority by mistake, so they will make good on any losses in a future shipment, but I feel bad for the chicks. Dying of cold is not the way they should go.

The 35 that are alive are doing much better now.
