One of my lavender ameraucana hens is inside today. She's not looking good at all :/ I noticed her last night but couldn't get to her. I pulled her out this morning and brought her in. She got a nice warm bath and blow dry and I mixed her up a cocktail of scrambled eggs, save a chick electrolytes, and a little sulfa...however that's spelled. ..just in case is cocci. I'm hoping she pulls through. She has no interest in food or water, I had to use an eye dropper to get the cocktail down her throat.

I hope she turns around for you, we lost a few last fall to what we figured was cocci (weight loss, diarrhea, no respiratory symptoms at all) and it is frustrating because they hide their symptoms so well until it is so late in the process.

Poor little thing. How is she doing? Did you try the intramuscular injection that someone suggested? I'm in Southeastern. PA, I have the insculin needles if you need them.

Thanks @Blarneyeggs. Chick is still acting normal, just sneezing/gasping for air like in the video. Are insulin needles available at drug stores by any chance? I'm worried about how tiny it is, and the fact that I've never given shots before (heck I have to turn away when I get them myself).

I believe insulin needles are available at any drug store. Someone gave me a box for blood draws (which does NOT work at all on standard sized chickens). I've never given injections to a chick either.

That is for sure! Very hard to turn them around when they finally show symptoms. But, it can be done sometimes.

I got my Ameraucanas from Once in a Blue Moon Farmstead yesterday! They are beautiful! But now I have 58 chicks!!! Holy crap! I lost an EE who was about 8 weeks old by drowning in the duck pool and 2 Sebright chicks this week. It's been a crazy emotional highs and lows. Trying to move chicks around and get everyone settled.

This chick is WAY too sweet. After seeing DHetzel's, I couldn't resist ordering myself some Blue Orpingtons. They are, for sure, my very favodrite breed and color. I haven't had any in quite some time, and I didn't return MsLadyHawk's cabinet incubator yet... I'm up to my eyeballs in chicks right now But am rationalizing.

I'm without a car at the moment (fiancee's is in the shop) so I'll have to wait til tonight to run out. Today is day 5 of it being sneezy, with little progress. But on the plus side it is acting normal, like I've said before. I gave it it's little dose of Tylan200 orally about an hour ago, along with it's VetRx rub. Btw, I got the Tylan200 because they were out of Tylan50 and wouldn't be getting it in stock until later this week. So now I have a giant jar of Tylan200/liquid gold for my little "flock" of 6... So if anyone needs any... Haha

Should I just keep giving it the Tylan200 and wait for the sneeze to stop? Or should I be doing something else? (Like switch to injections, or some other treatment?) This is slightly frustrating, because I just want it to be better and I feel like I'm not succeeding at that.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I'm a newbie so I haven't weighed in but you should take some pride in the fact shes still up and about! Tbe video was so sad. Only thing I thought was allergic to something you have but I don't even know if birds have allergies. Bedding maybe?

Both boxes have been found and will be here between 12 and 1. Really hoping everyone makes it.

Thank you for your input. I'm the same, a newbie so often I don't have much to offer.

I am pretty happy about it's behavior - the first night I was worried about waking up to a dead chick. But it's spunky and I take comfort in that. It's just sad to watch it gasp like this. And like I said, it reminds me of how I am when my allergies are bad (which is a pathetic, groggy, tissue-stuffed lump on the couch) It has pine shavings for bedding right now but I'm wondering if it should be placed on something else, just to check.

I got advice on the emergency thread to keep the bedding clean, up the dosage to .5ml 3 times a day, add probiotics and a fan indirectly overhead for dust.

Still crossing my fingers for your new babies

We used sand for the babies and sift it every day? Got sick of how bad the shavings smelt. Also used wet feed or FF for the babies. They didnt kick it up as much and helped meep one constipated one hydrated. Im trying out the heating pad brooder for this batch, fermented feed, sand, and nipple waterers. Took all my favorite ideas from last batch. Have an emergency brooder with heat lamp set up just in case but Im hoping it goes as well as everyone says. Good luck hopefully its just something she'll grow out of.

Hey B:

PM where you found blue Orps....PS: what chicks do you have currently???

A peachick has hatched !!
:weee
Also, another silkied lavender Ameraucana is out already.

And, I got 2 turkey eggs today. The first of the year.

Congrats! Hope you can get more of the pea chicks. I bet they will help with expenses.

I'm also preparing for meaties. We have, I think 40-45 coming in on May 8th, all free from buying feed at the mill lol. I set up my tractor yesterday for them, made out of the frame to the old frame pool the kids used to have. All it needs now is the fencing around it which comes in on Saturday. It's 14' in diameter. Think that'll be ok size wise? We plan to move it every morning. Hubby is terrified for the grass...

My grass will take a beating this year too. I am hoping as it gets warmer they will stay in the woods more. I would think size is less of an issue if they have fresh ground to work on.

I did get my first batch from Meyer and they were great. Only ordered from Ideal because I couldn't find baby East Indie ducklings anywhere else and all of my EEs from Meyer were the same color so I tried to find some a little different. I just don't get how both could be late at the same time. Coming from two different places. I guess I was spoiled with my first batch being fine after shipping. Just hoping they made it. The 6 EEs on their own weren't hatchery so I'm hoping they're a little tougher. Still haven't hit Pittsburgh if tracker is up todate so not a great chance of them getting in on the morning truck. Hopefully tomorrow wont be horrible. I'm done for awhile if it doesn't go well.

I really prefer getting chicks mailed to me in the summertime. Last year I had very few losses, except some bantams, and I learned that bantams need extra attention the first week. This year the only shipment so far had heavy losses (14 of 40 perished) because of the cold. I am getting a second shipment from Sandhill the week of the 18th. If they send them express this time, I'm pretty confident they will survive.

Is this the order with the brabanters? Or the banty Cochins? Any word on either? Just trying to keep a plan.

58 sounds right on track, I'll probably be close to that Jim era by the end of summer. Especially because I'm within driving distance of
Dheltzel!

Still no change on status. Apparently not going to be here on first truck. Hopefully at 1 pm today.

:hugs

Here is Cinnamon with her little babies. I'm always amazed how she takes them out in cool weather. It's about 40 and wet, and the chicks are happy as can be, out exploring the world. Also, the two turkey poults. One seems a bit darker and larger than the other. Perhaps it's a male?
