Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

Well I accidentally killed my CL. I think we drowned her trying to give her some water. Chickens are Trial and error.

In other news...chickies were born!! My broody EE is doing a good job. We never done this before!
The first two to hatch were from my CL that just died by my welsummer/Wyandotte mixed rooster. I'm guessing the one with the dot is a boy??

Then two olive eggers hatched a couple of days later. Next to hatch was a light brown egg that is by a CL rooster I think and either a super blue or a pure CL. Next day another olive egger hatched and a little yellow Icelandic. Mom has gotten off the eggs to play with the babes. I decided to try putting the remaining six eggs under another hen that has decided to go broody since I took this EE hen out of the coop when hatching started. Will give them another day or two to see if any will hatch

View attachment 1023157 I thought I'd post a picture of these lovely guys. This picture was taken yesterday, today they were out and they got attacked. I'm so frustrated, 3 were roughed up, they are blu-koted and back in their coop 1 is gone. Makes me feel terrible. Turkeys are so special, they seem much more like dogs than poultry.

That sucks... such a pretty picture though. I am glad the attacker didn't get them all and hope you can determine the culprit and eliminate it.

Hi everyone! I hope it's ok to post under this thread, it looks like most of you are from PA.

I'm originally from Philadelphia, but moved away for a bit. My family and I are headed back to the Philly area this fall. I'm looking for information as to where we should look to settle down as we have four hens we are wanting to take with us! We were thinking outside the city. Our kids enjoy 4H and would be devastated to find new homes for their girls!

Hello there! I am in Norhern Bucks county, and it's beautiful, but Central Pa is definitely more reasonable. Very pretty also.

I still have a few pretty large hatches coming up. I will be flooding the market for Legbars and Black Sexlinks.

Last I heard the Brabanters are due mid to late June.

Okay thanks. If you are overwhelmed with any chicks when it comes time to pick up the Brabanters, I'm sure I can sneak a few in.

Hey there! Welcome back. I'm near Philly. If I were to move, I'd go to Montgomery County, they have the very best 4-H Poultry Club EVER.

Montgomery county is nice also, but we found the taxes were almost double as most in Bucks County. Although where we settled our taxes are crazy too. :hit

They are beautiful. Hoping they make a speedy recovery. I am keeping my three turkey babies under heavy guard. I am determined to see them through to maturity.

I've been meaning to post some pics of the lovely chicks I got from dheltzel through the chicken train. I did a little photo session yesterday with the CCL, Welbar, and Olive Egger (shown in that order from left to right in the top 2 photos). They are six weeks old, and similar in color, but definitely easy to tell apart.

Legbar definitely already has the beginnings of a
Photo below shows that the Welbar (left) has the classic color pattern, but the OE (right) has a lot more light gold, and is sprouting a tiny crest. :)

OE again. I think she's quite pretty already. :)

Very cute, but how did you manage to get only 3 from @dheltzel ? Doesn't he have a required bakers dozen rule or something?:lau

Here are the poults this morning. I made my first cheese of the season last night, I use the whey that I strain from the curds to soak whole corn in and boost the protein. It's a treat for them. I usually finish our meat birds with this concoction before they're shown to yellow up their legs but keep the protein high as well.

Nothing like spending the past few days being hyper vigilant, watching the sky, paranoid and carrying a broken broomstick due to a chicken-hawk spotted in your trees...

I saw it first the other day when it was super windy out. Next day I heard a lot of bird commotion in one of our pines and saw it again. Then spotted it yesterday in a tree closer to the coop. It's either a Cooper's hawk or Sharp-shinned hawk... As a result, I've been keeping my tiny flock cooped up or very close to me when out foraging. Really hoping the hawk goes after the numerous squirrels we've got, rather than my girls! :barnie
