My girls are enjoying playing in the leaves in their run and losing feathers gradually. Not laying much--1 to 3 eggs a day from nine girls, but I think Lay-D Grey isn't laying yet...even though she is easily twice the size of anyone in the coop. She is getting tamer by the day. I was sorry to read about the elderly doggie --that is so hard. The price we pay for so much love. The kitten too--I rescued a little orange kitten who quickly died a couple years ago--and then nearly lost Sammy and Snowy to Calisi virus, which the baby must have been carrying.

Glad to hear someone is getting a few eggs yet. We are down to 7 girls now...like I said, we need to increase numbers in spring.
(1) doesn't lay at all..believe me, i have put that chicken on a lift to find the issue, she has never laid correctly and now..nothing-whatever, she is on her way to freezer-camp (thank you Fisher for term usage)
(1) lays whenever the mood hits (not often)& her egg shells are sooo fragile that half the time you can't even pick up the egg without breaking it & it floats immediately..no kidding! She is meeting up with her friend at camp too.
The others are full-on molt, with one girl just coming out of being broody ALL summer. We usually give her meaties to raise, but this year we had so many "other" fun life rides, meats had to be put off this year.
Still have some canned from last year. That will have to hold everyone.
 
Our coop also looks like our chickens must be running around naked! We get about 5-6 eggs a day from 14 hens, only because we have 4 young ones that started laying recently. We have several old ladies who have stopped laying altogether, but I don't have the heart to get rid of them. They're pets after all... so the older ones will be enjoying retirement on our farm for as long as they live!

the old hens might start laying again in the spring, summer, i have one old hen thats at least 7 years old and she still lays in the summer, that is if she doesn't decide to go broody, shes a good momma too so sometimes i slip chicks under her

We also have a couple of 6 or 7 year old hens who are poor layers but great moms... so they get a pass. Some other younger hens though who are poor layers and not willing to mother babies are on the short list for the next culling.
 
I'm never a fan of getting everything set up for winter. Especially when it's wet, cold muddy :/ But, I've got the turkey's heated water bowl and coop light set up and the quail tucked to their winter home. Still have to plastic the chicken run and get a new extension cord to run out for them but we're getting there.

The quail are tucked in to the big brooder for winter :)

Are quail that sensitive to cold? Didn't realize they needed that much TLC, guess that is why so may say they are difficult to raise. Would a lower watt heat source such as a ceramic bulb (lizard light) be enough for them? What is their low end temp range for happy birds?

Not quite sure honestly lol. This is my first year with them but I've heard that they tend to be sensitive so I just threw this together. I guess we'll see if they spend more time under the lamp or away from it.
