So I went out this evening and there is still one bantam in position over what I assume are some newly laid eggs.

What kind of fertilized banty eggs do people have? I think these little ladies really want to raise some chicks.
Hmmmm, who do you know with fertile eggs . . .

Bantams have been slow to get fertile this year. Last batch of 8 from the lavender/black frizzle cochin bantams only had 2 fertile eggs. Maybe they were the last 2 and now they are all fertile, but I don't know that.

I *should* give you laughing chicken eggs and tell you they are bantams. Their eggs are the right size . . .

That WOULD be funny... until the police came and hauled away both me and the chickens!!!

Are any of your mottled bantams laying? Frizzled mottled bantams?

btw: My very own mother was giving me a hard time this evening about taking away the infertile eggs from the bantams. She says I am a "mean" chicken mommy, and how would I like it if someone took away my children. (They are actually in their mid-twenties, so they flew the coop long ago).

I would say I have silkies, polish, and polkies but all of my silkie hens have parked their butts in nest boxes and aren't laying anymore. I even switched them all from the small coop to the big main coop and they just found new nests to park in lol

Tis the season! We have 8 hens parked now, and 2 more thinking about it.

This weekend is butchering roosters time, we will be culling 8 or 10 and maybe some other older birds who aren't laying any more.

Well we are down to 3 adult SPR roosters, butchered all the rest who were big enough to go. Working on processing now. We have 2 pressure cookers going with the bones, necks and feet to make broth, have the stripped meat waiting to be packed in pint jars for canning. Should get 17 or 18 pints of meat, another 25 cups of broth and a couple gallon of ground up scrap and bones (we call it chicken mush) for feeding to dogs or cats as a supplement.
Trying to get things done up around here because I have surgery scheduled on Thursday to take a bone out of my left hand due to extreme arthritis damage. Will be doing stuff one handed for a couple months so processing wouldn't be an option and I didn't want to stick hubby with Trying to get it done by himself.

So time for a bit of cuteness... a broody hatched Friday night so hubby brought her and her 4 chicks in for a couple days before they go in the coop with the rest. He brought one to me to look at its color and Mindy was laying beside me and wanted her time with it. So snapped a couple of pics. She doesn't spend as much time in the coops this winter because of her arthritis so she really likes it when the broodies come into the mudroom for a couple of days. She does pretty good for 12.5 but laying in cold coops for hours is not good for her anymore.

Maybe it's the light, she doesn't look silver but a brown Webar. I missed the cuties and my son wants more since his best friend is getting chicks next week. But I feel 9 chickens in my 8x10 coop is already too many for me. One time I had 3 chickens sick in my basement. I don't know if I can handle more sick chickens like that. And I have to take at least 3 chicks together, so they always have friends. My chickens only bond with the ones that they grew up with. But if Dennis has the sexlinked Ameraucaunas, I have to get some chicks. My blue Ameraucauna, Hershey, from Meyers was friendly as a chick but skittish now, but she is a great layer that lays 6 large eggs per week. I promised my son to get him an black Ameraucauna when there is a chance.
