Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

Well late last night something drew my attention to the coop security cameras and I saw young birds out running around and realized they were running out of the lower coop. Inside camera angle showed more worried birds (no outright panic or carnage) but not the cause. Woke up hubby who headed out.
Sure enough he found a large possum IN a broody's nest box eating eggs! Possum was drug out of the box and immediately dispatched. We have had broody eggs go missing recently (1 or 2 here and there) and thought they were being broken in nest squabbles with laying hens and eaten. Now it seems maybe a marauding possum was to blame. The broody hen lost a bunch of feathers in her scuffle with the possum but no major injuries we could find. She came back to her nest and resettled as soon as hubby took care of her intruder.
I hate those things...

I have two very sweet little cockerels that I need to rehome. I live in NY, but I'm not too far from PA, so I can drive them if necessary. They are 6 weeks old right now, and they are Easter Egger/Black Australorp mixes hatched from my own flock. Their parents are both very strong and healthy, and have super friendly personalities. Their mom is my favorite hen, and one of the last remaining of my original flock, so she's very important to me. I desperately wanted to hatch her eggs while she's still laying, but now I have these two boys that I unfortunately can't keep. I really want them to have nice homes though, so if anyone is interested, please pm me!

YIKES!!!!! I am glad you caught the intruder!!!!!

Ok everyone, we have permission to hold a swap at Prince Gallitzin State Park! We're going to hold it on Saturday, August 6th. That gives us lots of time to advertise. We're hoping to make it a big one! I'm going to create an event page on Facebook sometime in the next couple days. In trying to spread it far and wide and make sure everyone everywhere knows so this can be a huge success! We will be using area 1 of muskrat Beach. There's plenty of parking and lots of grassy space :) Just thought I'd share with you all too in case anyone is interested in coming.

Awesome! I plan to be there.

I'd like to go to the swap. ALL 6 of my store bought peeps died after I put them in with the 3 remaining I got last fall from Dennis. They didn't act sick, were only mildly bossed around by the elder girls, no signs of predator. Just, fine one day, dead the next. Not all at once but over the course of 4 weeks. I don't get it! Very frustrating.

My Olive Egger hen, 2.3 years old is sick with sour crop or worse -- looks like pendulous crop, not eating, and diarrhea. I am assuming she won't make it but if you have any last minute advice at this point I am listening. I was giving her probiotics and anti-fungals but really she is not eating enough to ingest them anymore, and nothing I try (massage, garlic water, even a bra, ) is taking down the bloating in her crop. I feel bad letting her suffer but don't see any options.

Did you use syringe to feed her the probiotics and anti fungus medicine? If she wouldn’t eat herself, you can always give her some with syringe. Also, if she has organ failure, then no matter what you do wouldn’t work. I had two chickens with Marek disease having the same issue. If it’s organ failure, they can slowly digest at the first few days, and get worse later.
