Something got my only EE hen today! 3 beers deep, and more on the way! I am sooo...ticked off! I've had a pair of Bald Eagles soaring over the property for 2 days now, and can't even blame them. I'm thinking fox?? DH found her in a thicket on the property, chewed on one side, and no head to be found. There are no emoticons for the way I feel right now. Sorry, had to vent! Only plus, 2 days before setting eggs for the Easter Hatch she laid me 2 pretty blue eggs that I set, and are developing, but this sucks. I've lost a chicken to a hawk before, but this is the first one I really loved. Time for another beer. Thanks for listening to me all.:hit

So sorry, Gardenin. It's always our favorites. Crossing my fingers for a good hatch for you.

Dknt forget me on that list:p

Cute Avatar! If you want or get on the map, PM Missy. She's the boss of that.

You most likely aren't doing anything wrong... if you have immune issues and are on any steroid treatments for them then your system is basically a 'sitting duck' for any germs that happen along.  If you are prone to lung infections and are around folks who are sick then I would also suggest wearing a face mask when in close proximity to anyone who is sick.  It isn't a perfect fix, but may reduce the droplet infections you are exposed to.  Also make sure you keep up with vitamin supplements to keep your system as hardy as you can.
For upset stomach I use jello in a weird way... get decent size glass, put in a couple tablespoons or so of favorite jello flavor mix, fill 3/4 with boiling water, stir till mixed and add cool water to fill and bring temp down.  You can then drink this to help settle your stomach and it provides a sugar boost and fluids.  I hate having an empty stomach when you get nauseated, I don't think theres too much worse than dry heaves, would rather have something in my stomach any time that happens!

This is such great advice! I will remember the 'jello trick' next time one of the little's is getting dehydrated from stomach issues. I'm sure they'll like that.

There is no way I can keep up with this thread.
** waves to SwataraCreek from 100 pages back** John ordered 2 wafers from online. Now he claims we may keep what I call the Monster-bater. He likes turning the eggs 3x a day.
Last night DGD (age 13) was here and we candled the 8 dozen that are at the 14 day point. DD's bantam cochins ( 4 doz) are not as fertile as her roosters would indicate. She needs to come see the eggs and figure out who isn't doing his job.
We were surprised to be able to candle the olive and marans eggs. It really really helps to have a second pair of eyes at a different angle to agree with what you see. Our marans and olives ( 4 doz)only had a few clears, so we should have a good hatch, if they don't sticky.
There are another 4 doz due a week later (Easter) in our very first scattered hatch.
I am excited to hopefully have enough Black coppers to eventually be able to cull for type and egg color. Any splash or blue coppers will find another home and most of the olives too. I think we will try feather sexing after hatch. How should we mark them to distinguish? Or... should I just separate and see what happens? Do I have room to separate? hm. Oh well, nothing has hatched yet. I have time.:)

Sally, I feel your pain, have been sick all weekend too. I highly recommend a pneumonia vaccine if you ever get the chance to get it. really helps protect lungs; lasts 10 years.
Thank you!
