I know it is hard to keep them in a cage for a whole month. It is suggested to give them cabbage heads and corn cobs to play with. I also planned out a quarantine with a run. Now I have to make another since THAT one is now a coop. And the other new coop I am getting will surely be just a coop. Which means I will be calling Mama2My4 for bantams. Then I can start working on a run for the new quarantine I am using now for the chicks.
I vote to have someone with an old horse trailer let us fill it with scraps from our building projects. Then when one person needs a new coop, they can have the trailer delivered with a few people showing up to help. Then that person leaves their scraps in the trailer for the next person.
Not practical, but it sure would be nice!

so last night was the first time we let the chicken out of the brooder. so put the pups in their crates and the cat in the bedroom and we let 3 of them out in the kitchen for easy clean up. Wasn't so sure if we would be able to handle all 9 and dint want anyone getting hurt :) now we had no idea how they would react with us, we handle them but never outside of the safety of their brooder...well where did they go? my lap !! LOL well I guess that means they like me,right? and they decided to use my arm as a perch...poor boyfriend, I think he felt left out lol But I was having fun !! there's nothing like knowing your baby chickens like you !! here are some pictures he took of it (figured he could make himself useful ;))

Galgo.....will be there just give a holler when....not very crafty, but I buy all kinds of things....If I remember correctly, you are just outside of mt gretna... weekend in june is better for me,,,most field planting is done..suppose I could do some mealworm starters or something like that..

Worms are good! Yes, on the other side of the rail trail from Mt. Gretna!

Well this 60+ degree weather has me in the mood to plan a picnic!! So, May 25th, June 15th, or June 22nd. Which day works best for those that are interested? I don't think you can add a poll to the middle of a thread.

Thanks. Who knew there was so much to learn about chickens. :) A friend just got them and she's asking ME everything. I want to tell her to read books like I did or research online. Why do I have to do all the work?
Tell her it's more fun to do the research yourself, besides, breeds you've discounted may be the ones she falls in love with.
I think pretty far for most. I'm between Lancaster and Harrisburg. Underneath wingstone on the map.
Not that far from me...and if noone takes it by monday, I''ll grab it on Monday if you don't mind!
I only mention this because lighting has struck twice...... About a week ago I was leaning into the brooder to clean it out and one of my BO's pecked me in the eye....not aggressively more inquisitive..... Fast forward to last evening....the same BO jumped up onto my arm to say hello.....while I was dealing with another chick, she reached up and pecked me in the eye again..... So, if it has happened to me twice...it might happen to somebody else...and no real damage....c'est la vie.....
Your eyes are shiny. Now you know why I actually wear my glasses around the babies.
She seems to be an EXCELENT enabler!!! I was just supossed to get one and am now getting 4, who know's what i will come home with! I have an extra large wire dog crate that i can keep in the barn, but i hate to keep them penned up for a month. :( should I try to build a little pen and run for them to stay in? I was conteplating doing this anyways so i would have a quarentine/broody/grow out area.
I keep planning to do that...may actually accomplish it, since I have my "get to know the big ones" coop inside the big coop, I can just move it out into the dog kennel.

Awww...so ok...ya'll are evil and talked me into chicks again.....I went to Kniselys cause the website said they had Iowa Blues and ducklings today....no ducklings :( So I got 3 Iowa Blues and 2 Silver Grey Dorkings (just cause they have dork in their name!). They also didn't have oyster shell...so off to TSC...where I wound up with 3 week old New Hampshire Reds and 3 day old Buff Orpingtons and 2 pekin ducklings...came home and cleaned the brooder, put sand down and some shavings...and everyone's happily playing/sleeping/exploring.
