ok we need advice for anyone who has experience with broody hens...we have a welsummer who tried to go broody about two months ago but she got out of that prett quickly and started laying again now she is starting again and it has been 20 days without eggs but we are hesitant to get eggs for her to sit on cause she only sits on the nest when she feels like it. she sleeps in there and she goes up for a couple hours a day. she is a little older so she only was giving us about 3 eggs a week usually but we can only keep so many chickens where we live and we are debating getting rid of her. would you guys trust her to sit on eggs or do you think she would leave the nest

Are speckled sussex good broodies and mommas? In my layer coop, my speckled sussex went broody on some eggs. My silkie, in my other coop is broody as well. I was wondering if I should give my silkie all the eggs or allow my speckled sussex to sit on the eggs. I know my silkie is a good momma. My speckled sussex didn't go broody last year.

I would let them both have eggs. If the Sussex gets up for too long, give them to the Silkie.

Some people also use the little elastic hair ties. When I need leg bands I take one of my daughters hair ties. She has a big pack of them with all kinds of different colors.
I have thought about the elastics. You are talking about the tiny rubber bands, right? How long can I keep those on?
never used them before,,need to start keeping better track as some birds are starting to age, i should have marked them years ago to make sure i cull the oldest ones first........would also be good to have numbered ones, like the ear tags we had for the pigs, i could easily track that one from birth to market.

You can always give her a couple golf balls & see if she stays put. If she does then give her eggs.

I have some nice looking pictures for you guys! Is it Coccidiosis?

No piles of poo anywhere. She slept under the roost Friday night. Was walking funny Saturday morning. I bathed her, and separated her. I have not seen any sign of eating or drinking. She is not shivering despite the 30* temps last night. She doesn't want to stand up.
Her last egg was Friday.

that's a good idea, the tiny tiny ones right?

The ones my daughter has fit on my pinky finger. You have to make sure they are not too tight on the chickens leg. A tight band can cause circulation issues. If you can stretch the band to get it over the chickens foot and then it fits a little loose, is the best. That size will not constrict the chickens leg but should not fall off.

try fake eggs for awhile, see how she does with them

I don't see any blood so I would be thinking more along the lines of egg bound. Try giving her a warm soak & a bunch of calcium.
