Yes you are right. My moms family actually owns a produce market too and I've been trying to get them to bring in organic stuff but they say that it won't sell because of the higher price and they're actually somewhat against organic stuff too for some reason, even though again it's healthier and probably would sell because there's a higher demand for organic now. But oh well

The only real difference between organic and non is they cant spray the product with chemicals within so many weeks or a few days of picking. Even then they can still spray it just has to be certain chemicals within those last few weeks to days..

Thanks Lisa, that is a great idea about the stabilizing, I will try to do that!

Do you try to get chickens to eat marigolds to affect their color? If so, is it just color that is affected, or does it also increase the vitamin A int he meat and eggs?

Anne What i did for my legs to stablize them was i took these cinder blocks that the people that lived her before us left. They were half the thickness of normal ones...kinda like a paver but not haha..i dont know what they are really called. But i measured how far appart my legs were and i put them into the ground (so the top was level with the top of the ground) and leveled them out so my coop would sit flat. Once I put my coop out I attached a 2x4 along the bottom that way they had more support and wouldnt buckle and I had somewhere to attach the bottom of my chicken wire for my run to!

Also what i did to my legs I used 2x4 for them. So I attached one on one side of the corner and other one on the other side of the same corner. Then I put a few screws down the legs to attach the 2 2x4 together.

Hope this isnt too confusing its hard to explain without being able to show you...

Thanks Bruttany, but I'm kind of a dope. If you could post a pic of your coop legs, I would be grateful!

YEeeaaa.. going to the dragon to meet up with blarney and pick up some of her bantam Cochin.....wonder if I can stall hubby long enough to see the start of the auction...

The RUN is DONE. Well except for the paint. And the bird netting. Ok. Maybe it's not done.

Chicken wire from top to bottom, sandwiched between furring strips. Walls are braced in each corner, and this thing is quite stiff and solid.

And we got the window into the coop. It's looking pretty finished at this point, which is good because we'll need to be housing...

Many thanks to MsLadyhawke for these lovely girls.

...or are they girls? the tall one in the back of last pic doesn't seem to have a tail. I'm told that's a very rooster trait in Langshans. The other two look just like our previous langshan trio.
Looks good! My Coop is not done, we keep adding on and having new ideas.. Yeah is it that the boys mature slower and more awekward looking, I have one with a tail and 2 that don't, OH NO.. I can't have roosters!

Sigh... Oh well..

Can be a trait yep. Also, the way the feathering is coming in on the wings/or not. That one you are mentioning has the wing feathers coming in differently, 2 signs of possible boy, but crossing fingers for all pullets. If not, let me know.

P.S. Coop looks awesome!!!
Hey Lady! I will have to photo the 3 I have from you, If the broody doesn't attack me, I picked up one of the babies, since they can fit through then wire, let's just say, I am glad that she was enclosed or i think she would have mauled my face the way she jumped and attacked the wire and my face was right there!!! She is a very good Mama! lol

Oh have fun! Those Bantams are soo stinkin cute!

How to get cheap pumpkins. First, buy them as soon as the stores get them in. I paid $3.97 on September 3rd. A dollar more last week. I am guessing Wal Mart will up the price again by the end of October. I also buy from a Farmer's Market that will have the humongous pumpkins (like 60 lbs) for under $10. After Halloween, ask people for their carved pumpkins. Be sure they have not treated them with bleach or a coating to keep them fresh. If you can, keep an eye on people's porches. Know who put their pumpkins out when.

You cant see the blocks the blocks anymore from the girls digging around. But hope this helps...

Classic L-Beam constucted legs. These should resist deformation in both axes, making it a good choice. Brittany, are the cinderblocks dug into the ground? Did you pour concrete for these posts? How big is the coop?
