It can go either way. In my experience, they still begin in the winter. Last year my girls began in November and December, with one beginning in February.

Wingstone - I assume you have a Turkey for this year? If not, take one of mine, they all have to go! I don't want to be feeding toms over the winter.

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone!  And offers of chicks haha!  Way too soon int he game for them, but yeah next year I'm hoping to have the yard squared away, wood cleaned up to use in building the coop and enough knowledge and confidence to go forward.  Oh and I need to convince my wife that this isn't a bad idea

My "dream" is to have heritage breeds, particularly Dominiques since I'm a history dork as well.  It'd be even better if, someday my son gets into 4H like my wife once was with rabbits.  We'll see!  

Stake - I'm in Chester Co. as well!  Landenberg, very close to the DE and MD state lines.

         Hi, wasn't sure how to start a new on topic thread so just replied to this.
         We're in Northampton County and have a very small backyard flock. Already my husband is planning for expansion next spring.
          Our goal is a colorful egg basket (The chickens are pets.) and I'm interested in adding a few (two or three) chocolate egg layers and increasing the colored egg layers we have.
     Does anyone know a good source in the area for peeps or are there ever swap meets or chicken sales?
Or do I need to mail order?

Welcome! There are a lot of folks on here that hatch. All colors and sizes. I'm sure someone has whatever you need!

Heritage breeds are great. I personally have 2 of them: Barred Hollands and Dorkings. Both need a lot of help recovering off the endangered poultry list. Let me know in the future if you'd like some of either one. I am in Chester County as well.

Speaking of turkeys, when you guys sell a turkey on the thread here, is it usually alive and feathered? Or processed? I would love a fresh turkey, but if it came home alive, it would stay alive.

That would depend on who is selling them and what they are selling them for. I just happen to know wingstone had the facilities to process herself, and she lives nearby. I've never processed a turkey and wouldn't make any promises if (when) I do my first.
