Quote: I've been getting some really fast growing roos from my layer pen. My head roo is a nice big, heavt boy. May not have to order broilers this year. Just use my extra roos.
I have some strange combo's going on right now also,,,,,,,some of my biggest roo's from the late summer hatches have Silkie in them...I would never expect them to be the size they are.....

Remember years back helping a guy caponize a bunch of young roosters.

Count number of ribs back.

Sclice and spread with tool.

Another tool to go in a pluck 2 small white pea size.

No stitch but in couple days incision swelled up.Prick and let air out.

They did fine.

considering I breed for meat birds,  this is something I would like to learn..

not sure how they compare with the Rhodebar,,, but the slow growth on rhodebar is the reason I am giving up on them,,,someone on here will be picking up my remaining pair of Rhodebar....you know how it goes, you have to stick with the program of what works for you...

shame really, since the Rhodebar are great calm birds.

when I get combo's like that I often want to post before and after pics but not sure how people would take that.....really funny how the 2 breeds mix and the weird stuff comes out in the dna

I must soon brave the weather and go check on everyone,,,, I never worry about food and water they have enough to last 3 days,,,and since it is raining they prefer the puddles over the dishes....only thing that might need food or water would be the quail....

I am procrastinating here, I really hate rain,,, hurts my bones.

I have been reading a thread about this too...interesting...a way to keep roosters around.

ya, the trouble is if the infection builds inside, it swells and can go into the blood stream. I would feel much more comfortable chopping them off and treating a CLEAN disease free cut than a baccterial ridden one. Its pouring and I havent gotten out to let everyone out yet. I may take tylan injections with me
Sally....the Tylan injections...at what area do you administer those? Could you just give orally? I thought I read that..somewhere..IDK, have to re-read....
ahhh yes, PIA. I am also afflicted with that, another name for this disease is 'husband'
So what I hear you saying is you do not allow your pups to be adopted by people who may eat them…got it.

Cutting yourself? I use them for chick feeders or sometimes in quarantine. The M n Ms in it is making me a tad bit nauseous as I associate chicken feeders with poo (they always seem to have just a little bit on there somewhere).

I let everyone out earlier, now I'm regretting it as they are all marching around in the rain, soaked to the bone….Dang!

I know! Those baby CCL's are so cute!

I considered leaving the run door open today. Then thought better of it, picturing drenched birds freezing solid if the temp drops too low later. Silly things would stay out there all day in the rain too. The thought of taking a hair dryer to 10 chickens is not one I'm enjoying right now. So, in they all stay today. ^_^
