OK< Peking Duck! Tell me about adding one to my current flock, Pros and Cons, before I say yes to the BF and to the person giving it away,... AND GO!!!!

Ducks are delightful and entertaining. They have lots of personality. Their hobby is slopping water anywhere they can. They are worth the mess, but be careful keeping them in with your chickens in below-freezing weather, due to the water slopping.

Do your goats do well in the kennel housing? If they do, goats might be doable for me.

I have visions of them eating the tarps. (My chicken housing is a collection of kennels and tarps. Hubby might not ever notice I have goats if they can deal with the same setup, lol.

Will it stay in my yard or wander? I don't mind if it makes a mess in the one part of my yard, always seems to have a puddle in it anyway (yard is not fenced). I heard Duck eggs are Yummy, and make a great pasta (obviously with flour). Do they eat different foods than chickens?

My goats are currently in with the birds. Only problem, the pigs scarf up the bird food if I don't tie them out before feeding the birds. My goats get tied out to graze during the day, weather permitting. I give them their grain, hay & water outside the coop when possible. We have had them in pens covered with tarps with no problems. They occasionally nibble the edges if they can reach them.

I guess it depends how big your yard is. Mine Pekins seem to stay much closer to the coop than the scovies do. They will eat more grass and weeds than chickens do, and seem to prefer greens over chicken food. Mine do range into my orchard in the summer, but I have pretty many ducks, so they hang together, unlike a single duck who will probably stay with the chickens.

If you're trying to grow ducks for meat, higher protein is recommended. Otherwise, they seem to do fine with layer food.

I don't have goats sadly :(. I wish I did! Blarney is the one with the goats. :) and lots of others on here. They do do well in kennels though, my friend has a pet billy goat who lives in an old chicken coop!
