Feather sexing is a sex-linked trait. There is a great thread that explains all the sex-linked genetics, but basically only certain carefully done hybrids can be reliably feather sexed, just as the silver/red (called red sexlinks) and the barred gene (black sexlinks and the autosexing breeds). Some people claim to be able to reliably feather sex some pure breeds. I wouldn't rule out the results of careful observation, but I wouldn't rely on it without a lot of experimentation. I LOVE the whole topic of genetics, so many projects I'd like to try. If anyone wants to collaborate, I'd be happy to do the genetics research and help you decide on what to cross. Anyone up for some sex-linked, super blue egg layers? Or maybe rose-comb auto-sexing breeds (to get around their propensity for frostbite) ? I think I know how to do both of those, just don't have the space and time to do it all.
and frostbite was bad for out leghorn this year, lost more than half his waddles before after
Poor thing. Glad it didn't get infected.

we put neosporin on him as soon as we seen this and seperated him from the flock with a heat lamp to keep him comfortable till he healed, I did give him antibiotic water for a week just to cover the healing

O:

Your leghorn looks like my CCL....He got infected and the wattles. Looked like they had grapes inside....I pulled him inside and treated with tetracycline....then left his food and water up high (he couldn't bend over), and I bluecoated his crop....He came through with flying colors and has been back with the girls for a while, but; I won't really be able to tell the damage til the blue wears off....

We blue-koted our australorp rooster also, he had a huge stand up comb and the tips got frosted just a little. We did it to prevent the hens from pecking at it as it healed. Looks like it is healed without much damage but won't know for sure till the blu-kot wears off either.

Okay I'll admit it, of course I'm counting!
I'm counting. I am so ready for Spring so that I can get materials to put up a proper fence and get the coop roof done. I called Ace Hardware yesterday to ask about renting a post hole digger. I thought the guy was going to laugh at me. I said, obviously I don't need it right now.
