I get feed from Browns in Birdsboro. They deliver to Pottstown, not sure about other places. They can make to order, but only in ton lots, and a lot of their higher protein feed is medicated (for commercial turkeys, where they routinely pump them full of antibiotics to keep them alive until it's time to kill them).

Their website is brownsfeeds.com, but it's not much info there. I had to email to get any real info. I think 16% layer crumbles are $11 or $12, I've been trying the 18% gamebird breeder pellets (small pellets) that are $13 (all 50 lb bags). We use maybe 2 bags a week, so it's not worth trying to do a larger quantity, but if someone else was getting a lot anyway, they might be able to get a lower price.
 
More chick pics! Hillary has been joined by 2 more hardy survivors. When I removed the 2 older ones, I pulled the shells and figure out what hatched. They are all a cross, splash Breda fowl roo over Barred Rock pullets. I was hoping this cross might be black sex links, but I'm pretty sure the splash diluted the black like the barring and both sexes look the same. Or else they are all girls, possible with a group of only 3.



Hillary is the darker one on the left, #2 is the lighter one in the center. Photo bombers are some week old Rhodebars.


#3, trying to be patient until I move her to the brooder with her friends.

What ever they end up being I'd definitely keep them. They've earned it. <3

There are a number of mills a bit west of us....I have been looking for a really cheap place and hoping to find a bunch of us to go together for road trips to buy in quantity....sounds weird, but so far from place A to place B....the gas costs inhibit the drive unless you are buying really large quantity....Wing's place makes sense if you are will to buy 1000 pounds, but, I don't have room to store that much and it would take me years to use....who knows...

I'm down for a road trip to the feed mill! But I've got a 2 month's supply right now, so it'll be a bit before I'm ready to get another batch.

Come to think of it, how are y'all storing it? We've been using 5 Gallon buckets, but this is sub-optimal since a bag of feed is 2 1/2 buckets. Been looking into some of those stacking plastic bins, but I question whether they will be able to hold up to 50 lbs of feed.

Can I get some pictures of everyone's feed storage systems? Could use some good ideas!
 
On the feed topic...
I was paying $8.30-$9.10-ish this winter for 50# of 16% pullet grower crumbles from my mill. The price will go up to $11-14 over the spring and summer. I was going through 150# a week. I picked up a 50# bag of Dumor 20% chick/pullet grower for $15 some change. I have gone from Sunday to Wednesday on just that 50#. I will be getting a 2nd bag tomorrow, but I still have feed in the tub. That 21.4lbs per DAY with the mill feed (a lot of dust/waste and I do not ferment and will not - sorry, I don't have the time, patience nor will), compared to around 11.1lbs per day with the Dumor.$1560 a year for Dumor and $1755 a year from the mill - with an average price of $11.25 from the mill. Of course, things change - like the number of birds and the intake. In the spring/summer I allow free ranging. I will have turkeys soon, and they take more to feed, but I also supplement with table scraps and free ranging. The amounts are for what I have now - and the number increases every 4-5 days with each new hatch.

My mill will also mix my own feed. I can't say how that will last, since I want my feed kept semi-whole.
Here's the last mix I came up with last year, but never followed through with it:

I use 30 gal garbage cans (plastic). I get 150# in each one of them.
