My chooks pounced on a field mouse and it was gone in less than 30 seconds....as posted prior rats are a different story....also, I have A_hole squirrels that steal some pellets....but I'll get their tucas at a later date....what critter is giving you problems?
 
I don't even want to use the R word...............but it could be them

just makes me feel like slum lord or philly restaurant situation where I could get shut down.......

I don't want to be in that category!

Plus I don't want any harm to come to my chickens!

I am not good at killing animals.............and yet those R thingies need to go away or die!

I use DuckDuckGo instead of Google, maybe that's why.

I found a great video to id the chicks:
It sure looks like 8 of them are New Hampshires. I like that, set 4 eggs, get 8 chicks. Those mystery eggs amuse me. I like to know exactly what I've got incubating, but I like the surprise of not knowing too.
 
Help! Got my chicks in, all seem healthy. I have a light above them on top of a screen, maybe 6-8 inches above them, but they are still peeping. Not sure if they are too cold or what I am doing wrong. They are all underneath the lamp. I thought perhaps it was just because it was bright and noisy, but the lights are out and they are still peeping.

If the heat is right, they should fall asleep somewhere around the perimeter of the light. What size bulb do you have? For the 20 chicks I'm brooding, I use a 60w, but have it down about 6 inches off the floor, maybe even a bit closer.
 
They probably just needed some time to settle down. Straight from the incubator, they are very tired their first day and sleep a lot, but coming from a store, they are way past that and are already little eating (and pooping) machines, and a lot more active. It is fun to watch them relax and fall asleep.
