Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

My marans was off the nest this evening when I went to check on everyone. Don't know if she is committed to being broody.

I went to the TSC and look what followed me home. A box full of Black Australorps. My TSC guy told me that they will be getting more chicks this week and everything will be half price on Sunday. Sunday is the last day for chicks. I got these guys half price. They had all chicks and ducks $2.39 or some odd number like that (it was under $2.50) where half off. Score!!
awwww...that is a very full box of cuteness there!!

The fermentation...LOL

Sally Sunshine has some very nice links on fermented feed with videos of the "how to" included.

You can ferment pretty much any type of feed. It helps increase usable protein in the feed, strengthens egg shells, helps prevent wasted feed, reduces the amount of feed the birds have to eat to stay healthy, & boosts egg production. Lots of benefits to fermenting.
it is awesome for them!!!

My girls are crazy about it!

You also need unpasteurized apple cider vinegar or yeast. I have been using yeast lately just because I can find it easier.
you know that you can make..or continue on your ACV bottle...Buy a gallon regular apple cider vinegar and a bottle of ACV with mother..use another gallon container and mix entire bottle ACVw/mother and add to it the regular acv to fill the rest. Give it some time to 'brew'..there you go.. an entire gallon of ACV w/ mother at a cheaper price..great for using with the feed. Add regular to ACV to the mix as you use it..to keep it full...you ill see if you need to add more "mother", but shouldn't have to for a VERY long time...well, I guess that would depend on how much and fast you use it.

...I 'pinned' the 'how-to' do this on my pinterest board..if anyone is interested.

I have done this as well, but usually don't need a whole lot. As long as you leave feed in the bucket to keep the process going you rarely have to add more UPACV or yeast. I only have 1-2 stores remotely close to get the UPACV, & the jugs take up much more room then the little jars of yeast. I keep 1 small bottle of UPAVC on hand for bird emergencies to put in the water & several jars of yeast since we do a lot of homemade baking from scratch. The yeast makes excellent fritter type drop donuts.
