I'm pretty new to the whole chicken thing so some advice would be great. My chicks are 10 weeks old and will not go in the coop to sleep at night. They all nest down together with my two ducks under the coop. Is this normal?

yeppers....my recent additions to the out side world took x4 days to find the coop....they are in there for the first night......hopefully your chooks will find the cover before the soaking rains arrive....

They have been doing this for weeks now! They go in and out all day, but when night comes they go under. They also love the rain.

I've had my chickens for a year and a half and Im having my first broody hen today. I thought buff orpingtons and speckled Sussex were somewhat often broody, so I was a bit surprised it took so long. It's funny though how he chicken puffs up when I open the nesting box, I guess that's to protect the egg...

Hi and welcome from the Poconos!

This week we scored 2 free wooden garage doors for rebuilding my greenhouse, a sliding glass door and frame for my screen house build for my pond, a roll of chainlink fence, all free from craigslist. Got a lot of work to do this weekend. Working in the garden, building a garden fence door, trying to work on the greenhouse and screen house for the pond. Gotta get my son to a day camp for football on Saturday. Sunday I am trading some eggs for a lilac bush that is 4 foot high =)

Just under 100 of em. But we got them on ye olde liste o' craig, for the pricely sum of $0.50 a piece. And then we only paid for 60 of them since the gentleman who was selling them was also a scrapper who and was kind enough to haul away our old dishwasher, mower, and an old soda machine, in exchange for some blocks. I get blocks and lose junk. Win for everyone. (And I've managed to convince the D.O. that a Cement Mixer was an acceptable purchase.) The bed is 3 courses high, with the bottom third as fill dirt, the middle third as a mix of garden soil and compost, and the top third as "Mel's Mix", which is itself 1/3 compost 1/3 peat and 1/3 vermiculite. I've had raised beds before, but nothing this big, or this permanent. We're in it for the long haul.

Gotta love a deal! Sounds like you'll be inundated with fresh veggies this year....

I just tossed (gently) my girls in the coop the first night and locked the door. They found their way back every night, but they do enjoy hiding out under the coop. And under bushes!

Sounds like a great score! I love busy work like that! Another lilac aquisition... I'm seeing a trend....

I thought she was gonna die, and I still can't rule that out, but she's doing way better. She's still a bit out of it, but she goes out with to other hens and eats and drinks now
