Wing...some broodies move easily and some have hissy fits if you even try. So probably leave them in their chosen boxes and mark the eggs like you said. They will be rather easily moved once they hatch.

That is my plan, will need to take the extra effort to keep extra straw in those boxes, hopefully will keep eggs from getting broken from others climbing in with them...
If it does not work I will just co spider it a lesson learned, or what not to do next time.

My you've been busy people!

Got my 150 plus trees planted. All bare root seedlings, so not too bad.

Almost have my field cut down. Hate the weeds, so decided to mow it all. Wish I had a working compact tractor with a mower deck. So long to do it with a little rider. Now to try to keep up with it.

Trying to decide what to plant for cover and wildlife. Maybe even edibles for me.

Great to meet groggy yesterday!

Oh, and more chicks hatching.

Is this a field that could be plowed, I am sure hubby would bring the equipment and just plow the field under for you, maybe plant a cover crop..

Yo go girl! Today is day two of our yard sale and things have been slow. Hoping for a better turn out today! I don't want to lug three AC Units back into the house!
I think your chickens are so lucky to have found their way into your home and lovely setup. I'm sure they will start laying soon, once they get adjusted!c

Anne, did you put the AC units it's on Craigs list too? That should bring some buyers for you.

Kling, just LOVE your set up. I hope you get some eggs. Loss of feathers on the back is most likely from breeding. They all look like they are going through a molt to me. If you're comfortable handling them, you could fan out a wing and look for new feather growth, the new feathers start at the axial which is in the center of the wing. They should have given you at least one egg, even if they stop from stress, there should have been one egg 'in the chute'.

We normally throw together a wish list at the beginning of the summer where each member of the family chooses a day trip. This year I was thinking of giving myself the challenge of mastering one video game that each of my children play. It goes against everything I think that summer should be about, but may give me some common ground with the kiddoes. If you can't beat em, join em!

KlingKlan now would be the perfect time for a spring tuneup for your new hens. Every spring I dust my girls for bugs, trim their nails and worm them with Safeguard or Valbazen. Then I repeat the worming in 10 days.

Your hens are obviously molting now and probably won't be laying for about a month. So if you worm them now and repeat in 10 days, you won't miss many eggs, even after discarding eggs for 2 weeks.

Rule of thumb about treats..........treats should not make up more than 10% of a hen's diet. She will need as much protein as possible in her diet to finish her molt so she can begin laying again.

How do I know of they are getting enough protein? They have access to feed at all times, and they get a snack maybe once a day, like an apple or two or some leftover veggie scraps, divided among 5 chickens. They also free range most of the day in my fenced in backyard. They seem happy and healthy!

I think the yellower one is mottled, and the other may be mottled. We'll se when they feather out a little.

Some of my mom and dad's friends came over yesterday evening for a bonfire and when they saw my roo, they said "Oh my God, he's HUGE!" and I was like "That's a bantam breed! He's like 2-3 pounds. The chicks I have in the basement will be 13 pounds full grown (brahma)."

On this note, what is the largest breed of chicken available? Jersey giants? One days I'd love to have a few "big girls"

I was so excited to meet CC and wingstone yesterday! Thanks to them, my incubator is full and my first attempt at incubator hatching has started! (And they were so nice and helpful as well and live in the most GORGEOUS AREA!!) My husband almost has the new run finished for our Dominiques and are Dom broody and her babies are thriving. Happy day in chicken land! Now to get our garden planted. Anyone know a good site for garden plans..like what to plant where/when?

(And they were so nice and helpful as well and live in the most GORGEOUS AREA!!) My husband almost has the new run finished for our Dominiques and are Dom broody and her babies are thriving. You could say we are characters in the least, I would not be offended...

Seems we are working on having a little bit of everything, what one doesn't have the other does, or at least we can direct you to someone that does.

Problem was it is swampy in parts at times. I planted 100 hybrid poplar on 10 ft spacing on a lot of it. It borders the creek, so I'm going to get trees going as a buffer there as well. As I have it ït is no longer plowable with big equipment. Maybe a two or three bottom on a small tractor. My neighbor has a small disc I may get him to run over it and throw in some clover or alfalfa or beets or turnips just to feed the animals. Maybe a wildlife mix.

Hubby found z good deal on some Beltsville turkey eggs ( not the midget white's, but close enough).. I have 5 broody's right now, do you think they would do OK with turkey eggs..
12 eggs split up between broody's might just work if I can find a way to desperate them from the flock.

Where did you get them, do you plan on keying them all if they all hatch? Do you know if they are pure?

I did not ask him, he knew I wanted midget white, he figured these would be the closest he could get, hoping they are pure, and I will have to wait and see if any hatch.
