Is anyone familiar with silkie genetics? I have a chick that has a white silkie mom and here is a picture of the rooster. I can't remember what breed he is. The chick has 4 toes and black skin. I was wondering if silkie feathers are dominant or recessive?
 
^I don't own silkies and i'm not a genetic expert, but I think they're recessive because when I hatched silkie mixes, some had five toes and and black skin but regular feathers. Some had nine toes amd pink skin.

This is one for dheltzel, only thing I can add is experience from when I was hatching these mixes,,,,the silkie feathers seemed like they were dominant, but the skin color was a 50/50 shot... I have a rooster who has 4 toes on 1 foot a d 5 on the other.

2 duck eggs this morning!
Here is the yard for the swedes. It took me about 30 mins to set up. That included pulling fence from former spot, moving hutch, repairing and filling pool. The fence is a remnant and is about 72 feet long. The original was 200

The pool is under the eaves so the ducks get a waterfall if it rains

DS has named the littlest one peanut. The blue drake is gonna be "blue"

I've got two Dominiques sitting on eggs, these two are the only ones left out of my original 8- they will be two this year. They never go anywhere without each other or do anything without the other one, so since one is sitting i think the other thought it was a good idea too. I'm not complaining. I have to stop myself from fussing with them and looking at them all the time, they've actually started to hiss as soon as they hear my voice. Oops. One keeps getting off the nest, i have to refrain from tracking her down and boxing her in the dang nest. The other is sitting on wwaayyyy too many eggs (or so i think), last time i got a look there were like 12. I plan on candling the eggs tonight, but i'll be honest i have no idea what i'm looking for. It's going on 3 weeks, so i assume it would be dark because the chick is so advanced. On another note, maybe i should just leave her alone. In other news - it seems as though my laced wyandottes aren't growing. I know they are a dual breed, again it must be the patients thing. :old

What a busy day . . . I'm exhausted. I sure wish I were younger and could get more done.

Sold over 40 chickens today! Various ages and all. Made some money for my niece's college fund. I think she's still gonna need scholarships and loans though, this is not a way to get rich quick.

Bought 4 too. 2 pairs of Crested Cream Legbars, THE breed I've been wanting for months. I'm very excited to have them.

LOL, thanks for the vote of confidence. Silkie feathering is recessive, but I don't know much more than that. Now the barring on the roo (looks like a Barred Rock) i can tell you a lot about with the genetics. All the offspring will be barred, but a dark barring, like a BR hen, not as white as their father.
 
I would like to get some opinions. I FINALLY was able to get a serama but she is a mix. Her mother was a Belgium D'Anver and her father was a Serama. It got me thinking. Right now we have one large coop for all of my birds. I would like to get my old coop in working order for my bantam breeds or maybe keep it for just one particular breed for breeding purposes. I would like to sell some hatching eggs and maybe some chicks. I know I'm not going to get rich off of this, it would just be for fun and whatever money I make can go towards feed and upkeep. I like mixed breeds. I think it gives them personality and I like to see what the different chicks look like. What do others prefer? Do you think I will have a harder time selling mixed breeds? Should I just pick one breed to sell? I would most likely use Facebook, Craigslist and the meets at Tractor Supply to sell. I've only been to one show and have NO idea about show quality so even if I do concentrate on one breed it wouldn't be for that. I wouldn't know what to look for and what qualities to breed out or to aim for. Thoughts?
