We're just starting out with chickens and have 3 Rhode Island Reds, 4 Black Australorps, 1 Blue Cochin, and one RIR/unknown cross (maybe a polish? Developing some funky head feathers, lol). Our chicks are about 4-5 weeks old, chicken coop is in progress... hoping to get these chickens out of the house in the next week or so since I'm due with our third little (human) girl in just 3 1/2 weeks! Nothing like building a chicken coop at 8 1/2 months pregnant!

I have these too, except my Wyandottes are Gold Laced and Columbian.  When I ordered the Silver Laced they didn't have any so they replaced them with Columbian.  I have one Columbian, one Australorp and one barred rock that absolutely love to sit on my lap and be pet.  They are so cool!

I am about  an hour and a half south west of you in little Washington (PA).

My one little Wyandotte is on the bottom of the pecking order and she is just so sweet. She loves to be with me, the other 3 automatically go to the coop at night but this little girl waits for me to come pick her up and carry her to the coop. She cuddles right up to me as I am carrying her, it breaks my heart that the other ones can be mean to her.

Been a while since i posted, but ever since the fox took all my favorites and left the degenerates behind, I just hate my chickens. They are broody, older and aren't laying. The fox even left the egg eater behind. REALLY she takes 12 and leaves me this motley crew of 10.. And I only get 1 -3 eggs a day.. From 10 Chickens!! UGH. How do you all handle older chickens? Do typically do a reset on your flock? And if so what is the best way to rehome/ freezer camp? Or let them all out and let the fox have a party again.. and wait a few months to start over?

And 10-15 Barnyard Mix Babies that are about 5/6 weeks old.

They are all very friendly and used to being handled by adults and children and all get along with each other well. My husband and I have decided that we have enjoyed raising chickens so much that we are majorly downsizing into an RV to save up to buy our own piece of land so I can have as many chickens as I want :) Unfortunately, that means giving up this group of babies so we can meet our chicken raising goals!

I would love to know that these chickens went somewhere that they would be appreciated and well cared for..it breaks my heart a little to get rid of them but I know that it is helping us get closer to where we want to be.

You can advertise them for sale cheaper than the average laying hen since they are older, some people prefer the older birds for meat also. Offer them as a group price even. Freezer camp is always an option, and in my opinion is a much better alternative (a quick and humane death) than just turning loose unwanted birds to allow them to become predator bait. I'm sorry, but (again in my opinion) it is cruel to provide for a bird it's entire life and then just expect it to fend for itself. If you can't do the deed yourself you probably can find someone in your area who can dispatch your birds for a reasonable price. Even if you don't want to eat them yourself they would be good for soup or would be good to grind up and freeze and feed to the next generations as treats. If all else fails and you don't want to mess with freezing them then offer them for free.... someone else may be able to use them to start a flock or fill their freezer so at least they won't go to waste.

If there is an asian population in your area they would probably buy them at the right price...

I processed a small group of older layers for a friend late this spring because they had quit laying. He hated to do it but he was only getting one or two eggs a day from the 11 hens.... I told him I found out why the egging was done when I processed them... many of them had egg tumors, a couple were internally laying and 2 had inflammation in the abdominal cavity, probably egg peritonitis? I found similar in a flock of 18 mixed breed layers I did last year... Anyway... just wanted to mention that sometimes processing is the better option.
