figures. Our day is full tomorrow :(

In my experience I have never had success housing rabbits in the same pen with chickens. The rabbits would eventually end up dying of some sort of disease or they would pester and chase the chickens to the point where the chickens no longer produced like they should have. I never tried keeping the rabbits in cages in the chicken pen, so that might be an option.

I was just curious if that was possible after seeing them all together lol. Oreo will be an inside pet once we get an appropriate cage for her. For now she's still hanging out in the garage brooder.
this was before she really got into kicking up her heels and really playing. If anyone knows what kind of bunny she is, please let me know lol.

All:

A vinegar with mother question....was talking with FlowerFairey on a visit and she mentioned adding Vinegar with mother to white vinegar and getting it to turn store bought vinegar to the with mother type....anybody know anything about this???

I have heard of doing this before with apple cidar vinegar so I'm sure it would work the same way with regular vinegar but it would probably have is own unique flavor then.

I am very disappointed in my potato tower yield!

I dumped it over and its only 6 big potatoes and 6 baby new potatoes.

Considering I put in some starter potatoes...........that is like virtually NO yield!

I am glad they are not rotted.........or have any pests that I can see

I think the problem is that the plants got leggy and then we had some rain and wind etc and the leggy plants got knocked over. I made a cylindrical tower using chicken wire and put straw around the edges and soil in the middle. When the plants poked out the sides I was a bit unsure what to do since as you add dirt............I felt the stems of the plant would get covered and make more shoots and grow potatoes.

But if the stems are on the outside...........you cant cover them
and if they are leggy and get knocked over with rain or wind...........

So I want to get more potatoes.................I am thinking of using a rubbermade rectangular container I had made that I drilled holes in all around to contain compost.

Since the sides are solid and there are some ventilation holes do you think this will work?

I know people grow them in trash cans............

Maybe I need to add something to the soil?

I need dhetzel to chime in please! I know he would know what to do!

It's too late in the season to get any sort of potatoes growing, focus on cool weather crops instead. My mother used to get phenomenal yields but just putting them in the ground and letting them grow. Weeding was the only thing she did to them. I haven't grown potatoes "on my own" until this year and we haven't tried harvesting any yet. They are so cheap to buy I don't think of them as worthwhile to grow, but my sister wanted to grow some.

Personally, I'd avoid all the "newfangled" ways of growing vegetables, like the potato towers and hanging bags of tomatoes. Read a classic book like "Square foot gardening" and follow that. You can adapt what you learn and get better results from experience.

Potatoes are hot weather crops, plant them the same time as tomatoes, or later. Mulch them well as soon as the soil is warm (mid to late June) and you can harvest a bumper crop.

Aura:

Kittens can be 're-habilitated', if the kitten is over 8mos, its will probably always be feral....it the kitten can smack the pooch on the nose a couple of times things will be OK if the kitten runs the dog will chase...(and keep on chasing)....since you already have a cat, your pooch may know the limits....my two cents....

I'm going to work with him and see what I can do. For now, he's scared of everything and hides in the back of the crate but I'm figuring that after a few days of life going on around him, he may relax. He wouldn't hurt the dogs, just run so I'm not letting him have the chance. Just holding him for all introductions. My husky had already lost interest in him in the crate lol

we had a buck dwarf rabbit that loved hanging out with the chickens, course he could go in and out of the pens whenever he wanted, which he did, he would visit every yard and go in with them, he only took a dislike to one rooster and they would fight until the rooster would give in and run, with hippy hop right behind him to teach him a lesson i guess, i used to love watching them til hippy hop disappeared, maybe an owl.:hit :hit

aww :( so hippy hop was just lose all the time? I'd be terrified to let Oreo out that id never get her back lol

I would think it would work much better with apple cider vinegar than with white vinegar. "Mother" is a bacterial mass and bacteria need nutrients to grow, not just acetic acid (the ingredient in white vinegar). I suspect adding some cider to the mix would help too. I bet there are good instructions on the internet for anyone interested enough to search for how to make your own vinegar.

Apple cider fermented in absence of oxygen = apple wine / hard cider. Wine fermented with oxygen (open top large mouth container covered in cheesecloth to keep out bugs) becomes vinegar. Apple wine makes acv, red wine makes red wine vinegar.

Putting some mother in speeds the process as yeast speed the process of making wine, but t will happen without it, the yeasts are in the air, they just might not be there preferred yeasts. Vinegar is just wine gone bad.

I have gallons of acv from bad batches of wine. I dumped five gallons a couple weeks ago.
