So......
I got a promotion! The school district finally hired me as a teacher instead of a teacher assistant!

With the pay raise comes the "need" for a much better incubator than my hovabator.


I don't have room for a 100+ egg incubator at this time.


Anyone got any ideas?

I'm looking pretty hard at the brinsea 20/24. I can get 2 of them for the price of 1 of their 48s.

I'm looking pretty hard at the brinsea 20/24. I can get 2 of them for the price of 1 of their 48s.

I've never owned a Brinsea, but they seem dramatically overpriced for what they do. I've been very impressed with the Genesis Hovabator, MUCH better heating than the old models. That said, I can't imagine giving up my Sportsman cabinet. It's nice to never have to decide what eggs I don't have room for. The autoturning and heat control are flawless, and I think the price is on-par with the Brinseas you are looking at.

A few notes if you go that way -
- don't waste money on the clear door, you will want to use a separate hatcher, and even if you did not, you can't see much into the interior anyway.
- don't buy the $40+ water bucket. Very easy to make something as good or better yourself, and you probably won't need it (I dry hatch and left the bucket empty most of the season).
- keep your Hovabator for hatching, it's better in every way that using the bottom tray as they suggest you do in the literature.

Bought 2 NEW ducks at a swap last month since Chuck's girlfriend turned out to be a boy. These were guarenteed girls, they would quack and everything. Well, guess who's now getting a curly tail feather? My two new "girls"! Does anybody out there have MATURE hens? I can give you a grey drake and a black drake with some white freckling on his chest that might feather in more.

Bought 2 NEW ducks at a swap last month since Chuck's girlfriend turned out to be a boy. These were guarenteed girls, they would quack and everything. The only hens I may have are anconas & they are babies. I can sex them very accurately though. I've not been wrong on any yet.

I've watched the videos from Metzger Farms and it appears waterfowl are much easier to vent sex than chickens. I wonder if call ducklings are like bantams - not generally vent sexed because they are more prone to injury than the larger ones.

I don't sex calls til they are over a week old. Other breeds I can sex at 2-3 days.

Funny story!

My little one and I were outside today and one of our neighbors (we only have 3 that are semi-close) stopped over to see us. We were talking and heard this noise, I looked around and so did our neighbor. He said was that a beagle? I responded, sounded like it to me. I started walking around and looking, calling for my pup Ruger to come back as he was now stomping around with his cowl up. We hear the beagle howling again and start looking more and wonder if the one other neighbor is watching their daughters dog which is a beagle. My hubby comes home while we are talking and casually searching for the mysterious beagle. We explain the situation and he starts looking too, but we find no beagle although we keep hearing it. We walked over to the coop to let the birds out for a while and low and behold the beagle howls again and we burst into laughter! The crazy beagle we have been looking for was actually our buff orpington rooster. He just started being vocal today and he sounds exactly like a beagle! Who knew!

We love listening for 'first crows'.... some of them are just hilarious, some of them are really awful though, so probably a good thing that they usually improve with practice! LOL

Would anyone want a Silke roo? I'm pretty sure it's a Roo, but there's no crowing yet. I can also give you a Silkie hen to go with him. I can't have Roos where I am and I would like to regime him before he crows. He is the larger buff one in the pic.
