Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

I haven't been on this forum since selling my 4 chickie girls 5 years ago and moving from Massachusetts to Pennsylvania. Now my husband suggested that we get chickens again, and you can only imagine my excitement... like, I couldn't think of anything else all day!

Hello out there Pennsylvania. I am not a Pennsylvanian but a student a WVU and a native of Southern WV. I am currently looking for 4-5 roosters for a study I am doing for one of my classes and have posted on the WV thread and figured seeing as how close I am to Pennsylvania I would post here as well hoping to not offend anyone since I am not from Pennsylvania.

I am looking for 4-5 Rooster of mature age prefeablely game stock and 1-2 other them standard meat or layer stock birds. I am doing a breed comparison study to see how different types of rooster habitat with hen of completely different type. After my study I will take the roosters to my home farm in the southern part of WV where they will be placed in pens with flocks of there own breed or flocks of experimental/mixture breeding.

Thank you very much for your time.

I have a rhode island red for you

I just wanted to say thank you! to auroradream26 for sending me her chicken saddles she made. I also want everyone to know that these are of very good craftsmanship and she has a great choice of patterns. The saddles came in just a few days awesome work. Thanks Auroradream....

Welcome back!

I'm sure no one here is willing to help you with starting a flock!;)

What part of PA are you in? Just so we know who the prime enablers will be this time.

Welcome back! I know at least a couple of us already have the bators up and running :)

Thanks for sharing... it got me thinking about meat birds. DH wants to do some meat birds this year and I figured we'd just get Cornish Cross since that is the 'standard'. But after reading this I maybe might start thinking about the Delaware, they were described as 'king of the meat birds' for a short while before Cornish Cross took over. And the Delawares are beautiful. Anyone have any experience with other meat birds? We plan to have a tractor that we move around the yard so they can forage a little in addition to their feed. This will be our first year with meat birds, so any advice is greatly appreciated!
Also, for those who do meat birds, when do you usually start them? And how long do you keep them in the brooder before moving them out?

Emorems0:

"Delaware fight blue hens"....during the revolutionary war Delaware soldiers took their roosters for cock fights and cleaned up....don't know about the hens' temperments.....you might also look at the Dorkings...they are a good meat bird, but I don't think any grow as quickly as the cornishx.....my two cents.....

What is everybody charging for eggs? I have been giving mine away to friends but now other people are wanting to buy. I was thinking $2.50 a dozen. Does that sound right? Thanks ahead for your help.

Lab:

The closer you are to a city the better the price you will get and the feed prices are higher too...I am getting $3/doz.....but I think if I really tried to market them I might be able to get $4...(whole foods is getting about $4.5-5.0)

I don't have any extras to give you, but I am interested in your study....maybe you could pop back in from time to time to give us some of your findings...(there also may be a few folks on here who could contribute data...just a thought).....good luck!
