Quote: Glad to hear there are no blockages! My dad just had a heart attack and it was a huge shock to everyone because he is in such good physical shape. I'm sure it was the smoking and daily tastycakes that finally caught up to him. He's since quit smoking but I'm not sure how much he's changed his diet... people (and many doctors) don't pay as much attention to inflammatory foods like sugar and grains and processed stuff as is really warranted. I love this video on the subject... I thought you and your husband might find it helpful (I'm hoping next time I'm home I can get my dad to watch it!).

Quote: I'm about an hour south of you near Beaver, PA. We have RIR, black australorps, delaware, dark cornish, bourbon red turkeys, and some cornish roasters that are due for processing next weekend (if hubs ever coordinates with his friend about the plucker!).
Delaware are supposed to be a good meat bird (that you could get eggs for)... I guess they were 'the' meat bird for a while before the cornish cross was developed. We have some that we want to eventually breed with the dark cornish for long term selective breeding, but they are supposed to be pretty good just as they are (no experience as mine are only ~8 weeks).
I'd be interested in some dark Cornish eggs if you ever want to share ;). I want to breed the. With my white rocks and orpingtons to see what results.

Just figured I'd post here, I have a few bantam cochin cockerels that I don't want to take from mama yet but will be available soon. Their dad is the best roo I've ever had. All the girls love him, he's really a sweet boy. Never has come after anyone, not even once.

Just trying to share the good roo wealth, I know they're hard to find.

This is from last week, they're getting their wing feathers and little combs now.

Health question... one of the Cornish cross birds has a discolored comb/face... where all the other birds have a bright red/peach comb & face, one of them has a darker red, somewhat purple-ish. I didn't think much of it until today when I noticed she wasn't running around as much as the other ones. She was reluctant to follow me when I brought food and water which usually has them all running/waddling as fast as their legs can carry them. My daughter had to really push and prod her to get back down to the tractor for fresh water this evening (she had been stealing food from the turkeys). Thoughts? They only have less than a week to go before processing.

you might have to go ahead and process her or him early, sounds like it not getting enough oxygen BUT not sure

Sure... they are only 8 weeks old now. I have 4 so hopefully there are some of each gender, I haven't really looked closely since they are mixed in with a bunch of other birds at the moment. I eventually plan to have a second coop for the backyard meat project so I'll be able to keep them separate from my layers when I want true eggs.
