Wow! Is everyone that busy today?
I was just informed by the feed store that layer feed encourages chickens to lay. That they will not lay if they are not fed it, and that they should only be fed it if you want them to lay.
Anyone agree with that? I don't. Layer feed has lower protein, and adds calcium. That has been my understanding.

Partial truths. If a hen is malnourished she isn't going to lay or she will have problems, perhaps eggs with thin shells, etc, but layer feed will not "make" them lay. It just gives them a balanced diet if they are laying, especially the calcium in it.
You can also feed them a good quality food without calcium (If you have other non laying poultry eating it), and provide a bowl of oyster shells or a calcium supplement on the side.
 
I'm doing an experiment since I have a broody. I had forgotten that we preserved some eggs in oil about 2 months ago and I happened to look and saw them. I cleaned up 4 of them that were from my girls that I had to put down. Since it was back before they got sick, I'm curious to see if any will hatch.

I seem to recall reading an article in mother earth news some time ago where they tried different methods of preserving eggs to eat. Their results were unwashed eggs stored in the refrigerator. Their results were most old methods of preservation didn't work as well. (I think they stopped at 6 months, still edible, not as good, though)

Not sure if it will make a difference for hatching. My gut feeling is the lack of oxygen would destroy viability.

I hear people say all kinds of things about chicken raising. From "you need a rooster to get eggs " to "oyster shell is the same as grit". I believe that there is always room for improvement and learning. And then there's a time to smile politely, and thank God I am not that person's animal.
