Found a few robin chicks as a kid...never were able to keep them going, but the vet suggested(at that time many years ago) turn dry dog food into a mush, the chicks seemed to like it when offered......

I might have to try that one. I know he gets really excited about fermented chick starter lol. He'll open his little mouth for worms and everything but if he gets the chick starter, he peeps all excited and his little butt wiggles all around lol. I'm going to make him some scrambled eggs this morning too, to keep his protien up. So far, he's doing really well and has dramatically perked up from when we found him. His little tail and wing feathers are coming in nice too :)

Good morning, all. I was up before the chickens-stupid allergies are giving me sinus headaches. I wake up with one every day. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

At what point do I offer egg shells for calcium? I have owned my chicks for only 13 weeks, but I have always suspected that they were older than I thought. They are starting to redden up. (I know that it can still be a while.)

On a different note, we had our first day of no rain yesterday. It feels like forever since that happened. Today, though, we may be in for severe storms. Hope everyone stays safe and dry!

I use Allegra (not D) for my allergies. it's the only thing that works for me. Mine are only here and there though and I only take it when necessary.

For your girls, I'd go ahead and put out oyster shell/egg shells, free choice, now. They'll really only eat it when they need it so it's best to have it ready and available.

I know how you feel with the rain too. It was BEAUTIFUL out yesterday! First time in at least 2 weeks that our garden actually got some sun and not flooded lol. I was hoping for more nice days in a row though. We fully took advantage of it and processed 6 extra boys before hubby had to leave for work.

I use Zyrtec, I've never tried Allegra. With having each of my babies, my allergies have gotten worse. My Dr wants me to see an allergist about shots, but I seriously don't have time for that process. (Weekly trip, sit in the office, etc.) So, I'm trying to avoid that.

I was actually in my garden yesterday, weeding in the mud. I would love to do more today, but it doesn't look very good here and it is tremendously humid for 6:45 am.

It's good to know that someone here processes birds. I want to do that next year. I was hoping this year, but I'm not sure that time will permit it.

Does anyone here raise quail? I was looking at how sustainable they are as a meat source...

Yup yup. Allergies are killing me today too. I think I was up at five. I tried to go back to sleep, but gave up.
It will be a while before the girls "need" calcium since they have enough now before they lay. However, it isn't wrong to offer it free choice now.
Back to allergies, nasal meds work great. Even just saline will help.

I have starter feed and regular layer feed. Trouble is, the big girls LOOOOVE the starter feed. And the layer feed gets scattered all over the run. It won't hurt the littles if they eat some of the big chick food as long as it isn't the only thing they get, will it? And why do the bigs like the baby food? Does it have chicken crack in it or something?

so shocked today...
started a new part time job at a local grocery store. meat department of all places...
I can not believe the trimmings that go in the trash....i could feed myself off of what gets thrown away daily...

I often wonder what happens to all the things that are not cosmetically perfect. Glad to hear you landed a new gig. Hope it works out for you.

I let the flock out again. There is a pile of ... I forgot the name somehow. The stuff used for windows in place of glass. Anyway, there is a bunch behind the green shed. I am assuming that they saw their reflections, because all of a sudden, everyone ran/flew (silently) to the coop. It was quite funny! Plexiglass!
A cat was sitting on my property watching me. I finally asked the dog why he was allowing it. He turned, and saw the cat, and chased it. After that, he kept an eye on the flock, and chased the cat again. :yesss: The cat isn't a danger, but it's the idea.
The flock is so happy to get out. I hope I am able to keep letting them out on most evenings. They will be happier when the landscaper finally shows up. Fresh clippings to scratch through!

Yay! Good Sturgis!

you should tell them you have a big 'ol dog at home and he would just love to have all those trimmings....:D

Ditto!

He heard you had a bird farm there and saw he could be adopted with no re homing fee.

NeilMed Sinus Rinse. Awesome product. Abort $12.

They eat it because they're not supposed to!

I'm having a friend pop by with her kids this morning for chicken chat. They want to have chickens soon. Always excited to introduce more people to our hobby. (Way of life?). :D

Lol, that must be it :) he's really living it up here :)

Hubby does help. I really don't think I could actually dispatch them on my own. Everything else I could probably do. This time, we actually had the kids out there helping for the first time with plucking. They realized that it's not as horrible a process as they thought and we even had a race to see what team could pluck their bird faster, daddy and Brendon (10 yo) or me and Katelyn (8 yo). Katelyn and I kicked butt lol. A little weird and different but it worked to lighten the experience.

Allergy shots can be given at home. I did my ex husband's & my oldest son's for several years. They like to do the first few at the office to make sure you don't have a reaction & that you get taught how & what to do to do them yourself. After that, the serum can even be mailed to your house. You just have to ask.

That would be awesome. I already give myself a monthly B12 shot, so I'm sure I could learn to do it.
