I don't have RIRs, but as a single comb breed they should start looking more prominent by 5 or 6 weeks and by 10 or 12 it should be pretty obvious which are boys vs girls... this has just been my experience with other single comb breeds I have raised, so no written in stone...
I have had a few barn yard mixes who developed their combs as early as 3 or 4 weeks though... RIRs combs are usually pretty tall, so should show different rather early.

I have a container of dirt and worms in the cage with her along with chick starter. The plan is to release her once I see her finding food on her own in the cage and once I make sure she can fly. But, if there's something wrong with her wing, I have a feeling she may become a member of the family lol. I was watching her earlier when I fed her and when she gets excited and the wings and tail start going, I noticed the wing that I'm concerned about doesn't move much.

Great! Either way with the wing, she'll have a happy life, so that's good. This morning there was a bluebird in our woodburner! I thought of you.

Yesterday was beautiful in our neck of Penns woods and I opened up the pop door to let the 2 latest broody hens out with their 4 day olds. They have been in their 6x6 broody stall since hatch since the weather has been so horrible and these are both 1st time broodies so we wanted to watch them the first few days...
The Littles weren't too sure about this outside stuff at first...

Thanks for the warning this time! :lol: Loved those pics. Especially the sunbathing beauties! Does anyone know why they sun bathe? I wonder if there is a scientific reason, because I see even black hens do it when it's 80* outside, it must be quite hot.

My Mamas and their chicks are doing well. Fisher lady, have you ever had a broody go through a big molt after she hatched her chickens out? I've had the one lose some feathers before in December when she hatched out her brood, but I seems like this time she is getting a really good shed this time. I do see a lot of new pin feathers coming in, and she seems healthy. Her feathers just look terrible, but it least it's summer and she doesn't need them for warmth!

It is common for them to go through a molt after a hatch, I believe it is a hormonal driven thing, amount of molting varies from hen to hen.

lol, I love bluebirds!

How risky would it be to put baby bird in the brooder with the chicks? I have 6 chicks ages 1 day to 10 days. I just feel bad for her all alone out in her cage all day. It's so obvious that she's lonely. She gets really upset when I put her back in there.
