Well everyone, I've been busted lol. Remember last week when I said I picked up a new incubator and was selling the old one and hubby didn't know? Well, I had the old up for sale on a yard sale Facebook page. Normally my husband's doesn't get on Facebook and is not a member of the yard sale page so I wasn't worried about it. This morning, he asked me why I had an incubator up for sale (I think his brother told him lol) because he thought I wanted them. BUSTED! So I played it off and said, yeah, that's the old one, I only need two. He was like oh, ok....wait? You have 3? So I told him about the new one and how it was cheap because someone bought it but never used it and with me selling the old one, that made it super cheap. He didn't care that I bought it, but told me I'm sneaky and said all you chicken people are a bad influence lol

I'm so sorry. I lost my Mom over 10 years ago and I still miss her, life is never the same after a parent is gone. It did make me want to enjoy more fully the time with those I still had with me.
That is one of the main reasons for us moving to Michigan, to spend time with our parents while they are still here.

hello all! I have not been following posts for awhile..............there are so many that I just had to jump to the latest...........
I have a newly laying wyandotte chicken and I have noticed some blood on the outside of the egg shell.
She has started laying maybe 2 weeks ago.
Its not a large amount of blood.............but I am wondering if I should be doing something to help her or is it just "growing" pains?

thanks in advance.

Actually it's probably "laying pains".

Us? A bad influence? Never! :P

Do enjoy them while you have them. I also recommend taking some video of them, so you can hear their voice again. I regret I did not do that. We thought she would still be here.

Hi,'
Lifted this from a larger article on the weather Channel. Kinda interesting.

Does El Niño also influence how snowy your winter is?
To answer that, we examined NOAA seasonal snowfall data for 51 U.S. locations for which sufficient data exists and snowfall is at least typical once a year.
Finally, given El Niño/La Niña is not the sole driver of the atmosphere at any time, we thought it would be interesting to examine another atmospheric influencer during the winter months, the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO).
Put simply, a positive NAO typically means cold air will drain from west to east across Canada, rather than plunging into the eastern U.S.
( Karen: basically, no Alberta Clippers)
Conversely, in a negative NAO, more blocking of the upper atmospheric pattern over the north Atlantic Ocean sends cold air deep into the eastern two-thirds of the nation. ( Karen: basically we get Alberta Clippers)
With that in mind, let's see if any patterns emerge.
Snowiest Seasons: El Niño, La Niña, or Neither
Again, no huge surprise, here; a clear dichotomy. Namely, generally below-average snowfall in the northern tier of states and a snowier-than-average southern tier during El Niño.
However, as we saw in the first map, El Niño is actually snowier in the High Plains of the Rockies as far north as Wyoming, in the central Plains as far north as Nebraska, and as far north as the Ohio Valley and Mid-Atlantic States.
This would appear to be due to cases where the stronger southern-branch jet stream can occasionally couple with the northern branch jet stream, cranking up winter storms whose northern reach extends in those areas.
The diminished snow in El Niños from the Pacific Northwest to the northern Plains, Great Lakes and New England is largely due to the polar jet stream's diversion north into western Canada, keeping the region warmer and/or drier than average.
Digging Into the Metrics
Now, let's lay out all the data for each of our 51 locations, organized by region.
In each column you'll see seasonal snowfall averaged through all El Niño, strong El Niño, La Niña, and neutral seasons. The final column shows average seasonal snowfall over the entire period examined, for comparison purposes.
As mentioned above, we also parsed out the strong El Niño seasons into those dominated by either a negative or positive NAO. As you'll see, that made a significant impact on snowfall in some places.
Pittsburgh Season Snowfall (inches) (1950-2015)
El Niño 41.5
Strong El Niño 33.1
Strong El Niño and +NAO 26.9
Strong El Niño and -NAO 42.5
La Niña 43.9
Neutral 47.5
1950-2015 Avg. 44.2
While it should be noted the difference between El Niño, La Niña and neutral season snowfall may be small for several locations (scroll down for our city dataset used in this study), the general picture makes sense.
Namely, the more active southern-branch jet stream raises the odds of a snowy season in the Sierra, central and southern Rockies, including the Front Range, central and southern Plains, and from the Piedmont of the southern Appalachians to the Mid-Atlantic states.
On the other end of the spectrum, La Niña favors heavier snow in the Cascades, northern Rockies, and adjacent lower elevations.
The northern Plains, Great Lakes, Ohio Valley, interior Northeast and New England tend to be snowier either in La Niña or neutral seasons.

So I think we want no Alberta Clippers this winter.
Best,
Karen

I was able to take several pictures of my step-father-in-law his final Christmas. He passed three months later. My m-i-law treasures a blown up picture of him. It is the only one taken in the last several years of his life. When I sneakily took a video of my husband's great uncle and aunt complaining about doctors (ohhhhh boy were they riled up!

) my husband wanted to know why. When his uncle passed, he was so glad I had.
So, yes. Use modern technology to record video, and burn it to DVD. It will make you so glad you did!

This does happen and is typical of first time layer and birds who are coming back into lay after a break, nothing to worry about although it is a little gross. :sick. I've heard people say a little black oiled sunflower seed can help.

Houston, we have a problem!
I might be away for New Years. And I won't be back until the third. Fine if all goes well. Not if any duckings hatch early or need help.
Hmmm... I think I might need a flock sitter.

MCC! Soooo excited for you! And what is this Apple Product monitor you speak of on the NYD HAL? I am away on New Years as well, could you possibly set a little later? That's what I did last year.

Hello everyone! I am from Portage, PA. Anyone familiar with where I am?! New to BYC!
Welcome to the fun. What do you have and what can we help you get?

So is that a compliment?
