I thought they generally don't molt their first year? Or am I wrong? Also, she's still laying like a champ!

If your mite hunt doesn't turn up anything, let me just add that I got my girls last spring and they're well into their molt now. I hope it turns out to be benign!

I was under the impression they wouldn't be laying while molting? Am I wrong? She's laying strong so I wasn't even considering that she could be molting.

how would i tell if that could be the problem???
Follow about half of what MC said below. Check the areas that look like the feathers have been chewed off. Check the base of the feathers, check around her vent. If she does have the creepy crawlys you should see little bugs.....dust with what MC said.

Wear all black, and soft soled sneakers so they don't hear you coming. Wear night vision goggles, and a ski mask. You creep into the coop at night...
Go in at night with a flashlight, and check near their vents and the exposed area. Look at the roosts. You will see them. Then give them a dusting with Sevin dust or food grade DE to treat. In the future, be sure they have a dust bath to keep bugs at bay.
