Finally got a start on my 4x6 coop. It will have a 6x14' run attached. The only thing I was not sure about was the size of the chicken door so I made it 12x14". Thanks for looking any advice would be great.

Spring must have really drunk up down there are grass isn't even getting green yet o and be aware when u get them they can eat that spring grass and since it's not as likely to break it gets caught in the crop and they can get sour crop or impacted crop

Honestly I made my door I think 12 tall and 10 wide and it works perfectly as long as I never get jersey Giants

Looks nice are u going to paint or put on siding how many birds are u planing to get

Thanks......my door wound up at 14 high 12 wide. The coop will be for 6 chickens 2 Speckled sussex, 2 Barred rocks an australorp and a silver laced wyandotte. I will be putting 2 nest boxes in it one of the 4' sides, will have a 3' door. And there will be a,small clean out door under the roost also on the other 4' side. The whole coop will be painted. Neat box on the back side.

Ok well I know it should be 2 nesting boxes for eight birds and one for every 4 birds but in my experience it's not enough when the nesting boxes are all busy then the others walk in and out of the house until the others are done and by then then already laid there egg in the run so I would put in another box

I think 2 nest boxes should be fine. If they're big enough, you may have girls share a box at times (even when the other one is empty). I have 22 hens at the moment and they all easily share the 5 nest boxes in our coop and there's rarely a "full house".

Well I personally then just must not have very sharing hens because one hops in when someone else is in there and scares the others out because after they lay there egg they sit on it for about ten to 15 minutes and then sing then egg song and make to the nearest exit but sometimes the hens laying an egg just don't tolerate another hen jumping up trying to stave them out

I have one pen with 31 pullets and a roo, but only 4 nest boxes. Don't ya know, none of them will lay in the 2 lower boxes, so I collect like 25 eggs from 2 boxes, every day. Never found a single egg in there on the floor or the poop board, always in the nest. I have seen as many as 5 pullets at once in one box (16" cubes). They really like the communal approach. Those are California Greys and BBS Ameraucanas. The next pen over has Cream Legbars and I find eggs on the floor there all the time because those girls do NOT like to share nest boxes. I think there is a line with all the pullets crossing their legs trying to wait for the one in there it vacate.

Such different approaches.
