Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

I'm in southeast berks, close to Montgomery. We're probably not that far away from each other :) My father has the truck and trailer so I'll have to see what he's up to, might be able to haul everything in one go and just plop it in my yard away from my coop cluster. I think it would be easier on the hens to stay in a familiar place. Would be a spectacle to put 7-8 grown hens in my little coupe car (not that I wouldn't do something like that LOL) You're EATING them? :th Daddy was a naked neck :) that is a classic naked neck look. I have several NN pullets coming next month (I love them) :love
That would be so wonderful! I will contact you as the time gets closer. I don't want the coop back, so you could keep it if you like or sell it. Why, you ask? Because I'm going to need a much bigger one!
I don't think I could eat waterfowl, they're too cute  the chickens however....too tasty...sorry guys
X2!
My turn to photo bomb. Took some pictures of my partridge silkies. Gorgeous George. Mac because he hits intruders like a Mac truck! My baby girl Pumpkin
Love those silkies. Can't wait to have some more.
So I went down to check the eggs and lo and behold I have two chicks hatched under my broody hen! It surprised me. My wife jump back yelling "what was that!!"
Awesome! Congratulations! It's so fun to have broodys!

Well the coop and run are finally done. The girls were in it all day, they seemed to like so I put them in the coop for the night to see how they do. I have checcked on them 3 times this hour alone. They were all on the roost sitting close together but no peeping going on I hope they will be ok.
Looks great! I love those dark yellow legs! Wish they stayed that way.
Give your girlfriend a video camera!
Best idea ever!

Good morning everyone! Mi have to share pictures of my beautiful amaryllis in bloom. This is the last one of three bulbs in a pot to bloom, and it has 6 blooms on the one stem! The other have bloomed already over several weeks. Last year I just plopped the planter outdoors, which I guess worked pretty well!

Gorgeous! My mom has a green thumb, unfortunately I inherited her red hair but not the green thumb!

They haven't been selling quite as well here as the easter eggers do but I'm heading to a swap in Clearfield this weekend coming up and I expect to not bring many back home with me at all lol. The blue egg laying BSL go really quick though. Pulled 10 from the hatcher so far and 8 were pullets though one has a leg issue. We'll see how that turns out in a day or so.
Being able to sex them at hatch but still look a lot like a black Ameraucana is huge, so those BSL sell really well here too. I have a pen of pure California Greys setup and will start hatching them soon. The next chicken train run I can send some of those eggs so you can hatch some CG pullets. I keep them in with the Ams, it's trivial of course to tell which eggs are which - the white ones are sex links the blue ones are pure Ams. You have to separate them in the hatcher and brooder of course, but needing just one pen with a black Am roo over CG's and BBS hens is very efficient. Next year I expect to use a Lavender roo over the CG's, as well as Lav and Black Am hens. Then I will hatch lavender and black (splt for lav) from the blue eggs and the hotly selling blue egg black sexlinks from the white eggs.

Just curious, if you cannot tell genders of the blue sexlinks, how can you tell the lavender chicks apart? Of course, I really want to have a lavender pullet for next year. Brownie is so beautiful now.

We finally finished the fence of chicken run yesterday evening, and have hardware cloth wrapped the lower 3 ft plus 1ft under ground. But it was too late for the girls to come out. We still need to put welded fence to cover the run though.

Looks good. We have a much bigger run (12'x40' plus the 4x12 coop) and spent the whole weekend to dig around and bury the hardware cloth around it. Our girls haven't had chance to enjoy their run yet.

I didn't realize it was so soon!
Typically speaking, you will have your birds sold before you even get them out of the vehicle.
I hope you have some turkeys to sell too. The last year that I went, a guy sold all 12 of his turkeys as soon as he opened his door to get out. People ask you what you have the second that you arrive. You may be able to leave within the first half an hour.
It sounds fun. Even though I don't need any more chicks this year, I may try to visit there once. Only difficulty is my son having a soccer game on Saturday. Because he always cried and threw a big feat during the event, DH insists that we both need to be there feeling embarrassed.

He wouldn't let me go away.

Tillypeeps.....I talked to a guy that said to just put the 1/2" welded wire right on top of the grass 18 inches out from the coop, instead of burying it a foot, which worked for me because I planed on mulching all the way around the coop and run. I laid an extra foot of mesh on the ground and used tent stakes to hold the edges down. If I were at home I would take a pic and show u. I don't know if that method will work or not ,I hope so.

Blue (as in BBS - Blue/Black/Splash) is partially dominant, so a blue roo will produce about 50% blue chicks if mated to a black hen. Lavender is recessive, so with a black hen (that is not split to lavender) all the babies will be black split to lav. That works fine for sexing BSL chicks because they look black (the recessive lavender is completely hidden). If a chick that is not black (blue/splash/lavender) hatches, they are not sexable, even if the femle parent is barred, you just won't see the effects of the barring gene unless against a black background.

So, if I make the cross I described, the BSL pullet chicks will grow up completely black, but carrying the (hidden) lavender gene. so I won't have sexable lavender chicks, just black. As with any hybrid, breeding from those hens will give tough to predict results.

I found a place online that will DNA sex chicks from their eggshell, but it costs $10 per chick, so I don't see that as feasible unless it is a high value chick..

Hopefully by the next chicken train run, my Marans will be laying and I can send some eggs down your way. I could send you some of my ameraucana eggs too if you wanted more genetic diversity. Some are split to lavender so I'm getting lavender chicks out of them.
