Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

We are under contract for the sale of our home! Now just to find a new home.

Hubs and I saw the new Xmen movie tonight. Was so excited to see Silkie chickens in it! No, really!

:weee :thumbsup

Got our first blue egg from one of the CCL girls today. I love when new pullets come to POL. It's like Christmas every day waiting to see who will lay the next egg and what color it will be.
The blue is nice, but I would love if it were more distinctly blue. It definitely different from the olive eggs, but it still makes me think more greenish than blue. It's kinda like a light sky or aqua-ish blue color? Will post some comparison pics w/ the other eggs when I get a chance.

Sometimes it takes my girls a while for their eggs to turn the true color. However, I wish to congratulate you on your new layers!! My girls should be laying anytime now as well!

Anyone interested in silkies? I have three unsexed 3 month bearded silkies for sale. Two are white and one is a beautiful brown partridge. I want to get them homes fast because I have way too many silkies right now, so I'm selling cheaply.

Well Anne:

Hope you find a new hacienda soon....I have a few SPR 's to give you as a house warming gift....

Lol! Always YES to more chicks. :) TSC in Sadsbury?

The egg isn't still inside of her, is it? Sounds like it broke and she was able to pass it? Does she lay eggs again now?

You can still feel a few peices of it in her. And it did break a about a month after she had it in her because it was so soft being in her that long. It used to be a hard egg. And no she does not lay eggs again but my sisters hen she has acted like she had an egg stuck in her also and then I felt in her and she has two eggs in her the one broke inside of her and she passed the one but she still lays.

There is a lot of variability in blue (and dark brown) egg layers. Her eggs may turn more blue later as the "brown paint" gets used up. Green is a combination of blue (that goes all the way through the shell) and brown (surface color, like paint). Many blue egg layers have some genes to produce a little brown pigment. Some breeders prefer a turquoise color and some go for "baby blue", but both colors can fade a little as the pullets lay more eggs. I have some older blue egg sexlinks that are now laying eggs that are so pale as to pass for white if you don't place them next to a white egg. It is partially that they have laid so many eggs that their supply of the blue is greatly reduced. That's not something I'm prepared to complain about. My pure Ameraucanas lay a very consistent blue egg because they lay fewer eggs per hen. Dark egg layers are even worse, breeding for a very dark Marans egg means you want them to lay very few eggs.

Generally, I find my CCL are less saturated blue than the Ams, though the young Jill Reese CCL pullets are laying eggs that equal the Ams in color (but not yet in size). Again, I'm pretty sure it's because the Ams are not laying as many eggs.

I'm amazed at the number of people that are looking for green egg layers. I have sold every olive egger I've hatched this year and last (except for 1 slow week).
Interesting - I didn't realize the science behind it all. No matter, it's still fun to see all the variety in eggs when we go out to collect. And at this stage of the game, I guess I'd rather have her lay more often with less egg color since eggs is the name of our game rather than breeding for colors, etc.

Wow. Glad she made it and amazing that your sister's hen is still laying!

Has anyone here been to Gifford Pinchot state park it's near York county? What's your opinion on it? And has anyone been to memorial lake state park it's near Hershey. What's your opinion on that place? We usually go to raystown since it's only like 30 minutes from where we live and plus we could live there it's so nice and peace full. And then we also like cowans gap state park, and there is canoe creek state park we like the swimming area there. But we have went to colyers lake and it's so small I should be called colyers pond. But I am used to going to raystown but I just found this out that raystown is the largest lake in pa and there is four bridges under the water along with the old dam and a village and a few houses and a mansion the mansion it says was the person of who built the dam but idk and it says it was a 41 million dollar build. Who knew? B anyways let me know your opinions on those places cause I would liek to go somewhere new here last year we went to Howard lake but it want much of anything it is a big lake but there isn't much of anything ranging of camping and the swimming area is so crowded you can't do anything.

Gave little chicky another warm bath. Lubed, gloved up and started working the vent area around that eggbound egg again while she rested in the water. Spent a good deal of time massaging and moving all around the egg. I could do complete circles around it, but she just couldn't seem to expel it. Nothing is more frustrating than knowing the solution, but not being able to resolve the problem. Gave up and wrapped her in a towel to let her dry and rest while I cleaned up. Picked her up to dry her some and could see a light brown "bubble" exiting after just a short time. Was able to help her "deliver" a perfect sized soft-shelled pullet egg. I am so relieved and hope I never have to do anything like that again! Massaged the prolapse back in and will let her recoup in her crate while we monitor her healing. Did I mention how relieved I am?! Whew . . . Pic of that stubborn egg cause I know you're the kind of people that appreciate such things! :clap Thanks for talking me through this one. :hugs
So glad to hear it! How is she doing? Did she prolapse again?
