Does anyone have info on a butcher in eastern pa? willing to travel with in reason. Don't think I have it in to butcher myself.

I have contacted processors in Ephrata and Green Lane. I haven't used either one yet, but if either place is close enough, PM me and I will send you the info I have.

I understand that you are not ready. That being said, it seems sooner or later, you will be able to do it. It isn't the horrible thing I thought it would be. I still can't use a hatchet, but I can kill. It was the grabbing the heart that I was afraid of. Turns out that was easy. I wore gloves the first one (I don't think I did the second one) but that didn't last. An experienced teacher makes all the difference. There are also threads to help you out when you want to try it. IMO, stay away from Youtube. Too many ways to do it, and some are not so nice while others don't really show what needs done.

I assume everyone that free ranges (or pays attention to the runs) knows the habits of their chickens well enough to know when they are hungry. For my flock, they come barreling at me when they are hungry. For treats, they only come if they see something in my hand. Otherwise, they just take a look and walk away.
I walked outside about an hour ago, and the two mamas came barreling at me with the chicks. Some of the chicks were even leading the way! It was pretty darn funny!
For the life of me, I don't know why they didn't just eat what was inside the coop. Because of the chicks, I do make sure that there is food and water inside. Even if the adults are the ones to eat it, it means that the chicks will be likely to get first dibs on the outside feeders when I open the door.

Our broodies and chicks are absolutely shameless beggars and rush us anytime we go outside, and yep, chicks will lead the way most of the time. One broody in particular will actually bring her brood right into our mud room to get treats (and it usually works, lol). Once birds hit maturity they will usually be a bit more reserved about their behavior but the younger ones are fun to watch...

Shameless beggars is right! Whenever I had men to come work at the house for construction or something, the girls always rushed to them as soon as they came in the gate. The men always thought it was funny. That's hi.arious that yours being the chicks into the mud room. It's like Haloween all year round! Trick or treat!

I'm thinking that I'll leave her stitches in for one week then take them out. What do you all think? I was looking them up last night and for people, the rules are 5 days on the face, 7-10 days on back/torso, and about 14 for legs. Think 7 days will be ok? Remember, it's heavy weight thread. I don't want her to heal in to it. Maybe I should go with 5 days? I don't know.

she is looking like she is on the positive side. You have done very well for her. Maybe because face/head skin is much more thin/fragile than back & thigh skin, the lesser time for sutures would be best, though I am not a vet.
If your thread is thick, it may still seep after it is removed.( Holes from the thread itself) Keep a good eye on it, I know you will. some antibiotic ointment continued on the suture site may be a good idea also. 
These are just my opinions, from the information described. Please double, triple check..reference for proper procedure.

1 - 2 gallon water in coop
1- 10 gallon? water in run
1- feed bowl given in the AM, vegetables/greens/grass...everything & the kitchen sink throughout the day
crops are full at bed time & everyone seems content...but they always "act" hungry, they are chickens & are always looking for the handout

Sorry that happened.  Sounds like you did everything you could for her.  I bet she will pull through.  The fact that she is getting "feisty" again is awesome.  She wants to live!  Now, she just needs an eye patch for the bad eye....

Yes, 3M makes it, and I believe it is called Liquid Stitches or something similar.  It is also the same as nail glue.  It is a all cyanoacrylate  I believe.  It is just sold in different viscosities. We used nail glue or super glue all of the time in the salon when someone cut their fingers with hair cutting shears.  It stops the bleeding quickly and will hold on even if moisture is present, such as when cutting wet hair.  Several nail glues also come in a brush on formula, which is probably better when you have a moving target like a hurting chicken.  I'll have to go buy some now too..

Anne , don't know how this was missed...hair stylist!! nice....and yes, 'super' - nail glue is the go to closer! Because there isn't a band aide made to hold up to washing/perming,(ouch when that gets in the cut) hair!! Have also used packing tape..doesn't look the greatest, but will work in a pinch.

Never tried packing tape, but desperate times call for desperate measures!

I had goose bumps on my arms the other day when I came to let the chickens out. That means it's about time to put the cover on the pool, and pack up the camper and go camping one last time for the year before the lake closes for the season.

I've got tired get back to my turkey setup this afternoon. First I need a little nap. Been up since 6:00 or so, and been kicking it into high gear all day again. I didn't realize when I bought this house that there were four thousand Windows! . Give or take...

Mira is now eating on her own. I massaged her crop earlier and got most of the food that was in it through and immediately after, she started searching for food. She's feeling so good today that I thought I would take her out to visit her brothers and sisters. She was so excited that she jumped right out of my hands (was only inches from them) and tried to rejoin them. They all seemed happy to see each other. Now, she's crying in my room because she wants back out with her flock :/ But she's healing up! No crying, fussing, or head shaking when I cleaned up her head today

That's incredible! They really are resilient animals! I bet most people would have just culled her. It's awesome you are giving her TLC.
