Just wanted to share something I found at the thrift store yesterday. Awesome animal carrier, looks to be collapsible. $25 but I had a $15 off coupon. For reference, my dog is about 55 lbs. she could fit in there if necessary. It will probably bring home my silkies soon.

I'm debating about silkie. I love them, but I am afraid if they insist to broody, I'll give up and give them eggs to hatch. Then chicken math will become out of control.

I guess it depends how big the ground we will have. If it's more than 2 acres, hubby may not mind having some roosters, I hope.

We have a group of 5 silkies and cochin bantams, all hens. They spent most of the summer broody, all of them together, and they seemed to have a great time of it, like an endless slumber party. I swear they sounded like they were gossiping amongst themselves all the time. Mostly they had no eggs to sit on, but I put a few hard to hatch eggs under them and took the chicks away as soon as they were hatched. I don't feel like they were deprived in any way, they so obviously enjoy being broody, I think caring for chicks is not that important to them.

IMO, the best way to keep silkies (or cochins) is in a hutch in your yard, like you would rabbits. They don't care about roosting and as long as they stay dry and there is a group of them, they are very winter hardy.

As far as the wetness in winter factor goes, I will play it by ear. If I find they are getting wet, I will keep them in a pen in the garage if need be. Thankfully, even with all of the rain we had a couple of weeks ago, there was no standing water anywhere that I could see. So I'm hoping it won't be a problem, but time will tell.

Lucky find!! I had same one for my cat to travel in....broke the window the other year. I'd love to have another one

I had a batch of banty silkies on temp rehoming in one of my pens....they are great, but they got pushed around by one large lav orp...she was x3 times their size and would sit on them if they got mouthy....
