Now I see, the Lakenvelder is the silver Lakenvelder (black neck, tail and white body) and the Vorwerk (like @dheltzel said) is the Golden Lakenvelder and is made from a mix between a Lakenvelder and a Buff Orpington.

We're loving getting the odd double yolker! Another bonus since cutting the reliance on the supermarket for our eggs.

Sweet! Congrats! My girls that were hatched around July have started laying too.


@dheltzel. I'd like to know what kind of warranty you offer on your chickens. I have one that may be broken. When I checked on everybody tonight, she was sitting in the corner (on an egg). When I tried to check to see if she was injured, she fluffed up, squealed and pecked me a couple times. I did pick her up to check to see if she was possibly injured. She started screaming, then Rusty the Roo started screaming, and it was a big cacophony in the coop. It was one of the black sex links. I wanted a broody, but not in mid January! Haha. If she keeps it up, I'll have to give her some turkey eggs.... :oops:

My Brownie, the sex link, went broody at 5.5 month old. But she let me take her out with no complain.And she was very easy to break. We took her out of nesting box couple times a day and tried to keep her out for a while. She stopped broody in about 4 days. She loves kids (human), so I think she would be a good mother. My son still tells me that he is missing Brownie very often. They were best friends.

Lol, the broody bug strikes! Ana has been sitting forever and has babies due next week. I don't think they care about the weather AT ALL.

I agree with Aurora, they don't care about weather when the hormones hit. My girl, Lacey, just parked again a couple days ago, she will get eggs tomorrow probably. She is a Silver Pencil, either Mom or Aunt to Aurora's Ana, and raised 4 batches of chicks last year. And 3 each of the 2 years before that.

A hen who enjoys childen is a special girl, I am glad your son got to enjoy that special bond and am sorry he misses her.

I've never had a sexlink or California Grey go broody. I had one Ameraucana try it out for a few days last summer, then decide she wasn't cut out for motherhood. I wonder if she is picking up a desire to be a mother from someone else . . .

I do have a silkie that is broody now, but silkies and cochins hardly count in my book, they spend more time broody than not. And it's quite contagious with that pen. I think I saw another hen sitting with her today. Could have just been for moral support, but I rather expect them all to be broody soon. Imagine if they had eggs to sit on. Maybe I will give them some eggs, they seem to enjoy it so much.
